YOU ARE AN ARTIST
Do you keep a diary? Do you like to draw? Are you not sure if you like to draw but want to try? When we think of a journal, we usually think of just writing, but this book is all about keeping a visual journal filled with drawings that you create to show the things you do, see, and eat during your days. Drawing your daily life helps you learn so much about yourself and the world around you. From the biggest events, like getting braces, to the smallest stuff, like tasting a new food for the first time, tracking it all in one place is so much fun. And Im excited to tell you how to do it.
We all start to draw, in our own unique way, from the time we can hold a crayon in our hands. Its only later, when we begin to compare our drawing to others, that we sometimes get discouraged and lose the confidence to continue. But I want you to know that you are an artist, and you can draw! In this book, you will see many drawings that look just like what I intendedan ice pop that looks like an ice pop, a dog that looks like a dog. But what you dont see is all the patience and practice it took for me to be able to draw like I do!
Keep an open mind! The great thing about drawing is that there are a million ways to do itit is ART, after all, and art comes in so many different forms. Through regular practice, you will get better and find your own unique style. I promise! And if you draw the things you do each day, the things you eat, the things you see, and the places you go, then you will never run out of ideas and you will keep improving.
Creating an illustrated journal is a practice you can continue your whole life, from age eight to eighty! Imagine looking back at this journal in twenty years. How cool will that be? There may be times you stop for a while, but it will always be there for you to start up again. You may enjoy drawing your days more on a special trip, or to remember a difficult time or a really exciting time. Or, like me, you may enjoy doing this each and every day. Some months you may pick it up often, some months not at all. Whenever and however you choose is perfectly fine. Let this be the beginning of a lifelong ritual!
A FEW THINGS TO KEEP IN MIND:
Like me, you might find that drawing is easier than writing out your thoughts and feelings. Keep your mind open to all the possibilities!
Did you know that learning to write the letters of the alphabet is a form of drawing? So youre already drawing and you didnt even know it!
Anyone can draw. Yes, that means you! Its how you choose to draw that becomes your unique style. It doesnt have to be perfect. In fact, some very famous artists intentionally draw things in a very imperfect way! Have you ever seen Picassos paintings?
Drawing and painting are fun! Remember that the more you draw, the better, so try not to be too critical of what you create. Eventually you will create drawings and paintings that you love. It is well worth the practice to get there.
HOW TO USE THIS BOOK:
There will be lots of drawing exercises! Some may require testing your materials and making rough sketches and scribbles, so it is a good idea to have some extra paper on hand.
The beginning of the book is filled with ideas, lessons, and prompts that you can complete over time or whenever you would like some inspiration.
At the end of the book, you will be ready to start your own drawing and adventures in your own journal.
