N icole Begley, M.Photog.Cr., CPP, is an international award winning photographer, named Platinum, Silver, and Bronze Photographer of the Year through the International Print Competition from 2014 through 2016. She specializes in photographing pets and their people, and is an animal trainer turned pet photographer. She has been obsessed with all things critter since she was a little girl. Nicole used to spend hours just hanging out with her childhood dog, Sadie, who would walk her to the bus stop and be waiting for her every day when she returned home. When she started riding horses at eight years old, she spent every spare moment at the barn.

Prior to starting her business, Nicole Begley Photography in 2010, Nicole spent thirteen years as a zoological trainer working with everything from aardvarks to primates, and seals to free-flight birds. She trained those animals to participate in their veterinary care with voluntary blood draws and injections, as well as to show behaviorslike teaching a parrot to fly around an urban park before flying back to her hand. Every interaction with those animals was a blessing to her, and it showed her just how incredible the human-animal bond is.

That is why she photographs pets and their people. Those of us who know animals realize that each and every one has a personality and, unfortunately, their time with us is short. Photographing pets requires a particular set of skills and lots of patience. Nicoles experience as a zoological animal trainer has prepared her to work with a wide range of animal personalities. Her goal is to have each animals unique character shine in their images for their human friends and family and to have those moments remembered for a lifetime. Nicole is pictured with her Puerto Rican rescue pup Zoey.

Creating a tack sharp image is always a goal for any photographer. When handholding your camera, the reciprocal rule states that in order to avoid blur, your shutter speed should be at least as fast as one over the focal length of the lens. For example, if shooting at 200mm, a minimum shutter speed of Picture 10is required for a sharp image Camera Settings f32 ISO 250 focal - photo 11 is required for a sharp image.

The reciprocal rule accounts for camera shake, but not subject movement. Since our animal subjects are in constant motion I always try to choose a shutter speed of at least Picture 16Picture 17 , regardless of what my focal length is. Although you will see there are some exceptions in this book.
