Preface
The small intestine has been uncharted territory for a long time as compared with the stomach and large intestine due to the low incidence of disease and the difficulty of mucosal examination through conventional endoscopy. Since the 2000s, wireless capsule endoscopy and device-assisted endoscopy had been developed and applied to actual clinical practice worldwide. The accumulation of clinical experience of small bowel endoscopy, accompanied with the advent of CT or MR enterography, resulted in great advances in the diagnosis and treatment of small intestine diseases.
This textbook of Small Intestine DiseaseA comprehensive Guide to Diagnosis and Management will serve as an evidence-based reference in the basic and practical sphere of the small intestine. The comprehensive coverage with well structured five categories provides valuable and very informative sources regarding the basics and clinical aspects in the field of small intestine disease. First, this book contains the anatomy and physiology of the small intestine, second, focuses on the epidemiology, and third, describes symptoms and signs of small intestine disease. Fourth, summarizes the diagnostic approaches including wireless capsule endoscopy, balloon-assisted endoscopy, radiological images, and so on. Fifth, covers various small intestine diseases, including small bowel bleeding and vascular diseases, inflammatory bowel diseases such as Crohns disease, and tumors. This textbook includes many useful endoscopic or radiological images to share experts clinical experiences with readers. This textbook has been written by 64 experts with extensive clinical experience in small intestine disease.
We believe that this textbook will be an invaluable guide to gastroenterologists, gastrointestinal surgeons, and primary care physicians searching for a great understanding of the latest diagnostic and therapeutic approaches to small intestine disease. I would like to express my most heartfelt gratitude to all the authors and staff of Springer who have dedicated themselves to the publication of this textbook.
