FOREWORD

In the last decade, we have been authoritatively told and forced to accept that the Earth has been warming up. Some of us are not ready to accept that. Before fully acceding to the global warming alarmism, we want to know why, how much and how relevant (if not dangerous) the warming is or could be. Many politicians, journalists and activists among scientists pretend to know all the answers. According to them, it is caused by man and his irresponsible activities (by emitting CO2), as a result of which the warming will be unusually high and will have disastrous consequences. Moreover, the science is settled, they claim, which is not at all true.

There are many serious opponents, skeptics, deniers, people whose views are different. One of them is Professor Ian Plimer.

Professor Plimer is a well-respected scientist, both in Australia and worldwide. He is a Professor at The University of Adelaide and at The University of Melbourne. He is Australias best-known geologist. In his almost half a century lasting academic career, he has published more than one hundred scientific books and papers.

In the last couple of years, he started addressing a wider audience. He reacted to the fact that one of his scientific disciplines earth science had been stolen by non-scientists who had been assisted by scientists who prefer TV performances, celebrity status, fame and luxurious life to the simple, solemn, financially less rewarding life of a scholar. He also understood the consequences of all that. He understood that climatology had converted into a servant of global warming doctrine that is not a science, but an ideology, if not religion, based on the idea that man, by emitting CO2, controls the climate. This simple doctrine says that rising, man-made CO2 emissions drive up the temperature on Earth.

As a serious scientist who studied global climate fluctuations in not only hundreds or thousands, but millions of years, Professor Plimer knows that there are other mechanisms behind the global climate and that the role of man-made CO2 emissions is if any very small, almost negligible.

There is no doubt that the scientific debate about this issue is still very much on going but the public and political debate was prematurely closed and declared decided. This is the reason why Professor Plimer moved from science to the public debate, to the dispute with the global warming doctrine and its adherents. His book Heaven and Earth, published in 2009, became a worldwide success and influenced public debate in many countries, most notably in his own Australia. I learnt a lot from it and was honoured to be asked to endorse it. I did it by saying among other things that If Id had the chance to read Professor Plimers book in advance, my own book on the subject of global warming would have been better.

As indicated by its subtitle Global warming: The missing science, Heaven and Earth is a very professional and sophisticated text which asks for studying, not just reading, and is, therefore, not easily accessible to everyone. Thats why Professor Plimer wrote a sequel to it with a rather unexpected and for some people perhaps confusing title How to get expelled from school. The title suggests that the book is not a scientific text, that is as its subtitle indicates A guide to climate change for pupils, parents and punter. This form of argumentation is a much needed contribution to the worldwide debate about this issue. I am only afraid that with all its simplicity its not a text for children. Even this book must not only be read but studied.

Investing in reading and studying this book will bring very high returns to everyone. We have to thank Professor Plimer for his nontraditional approach and for his scholarly achievement.

PREAMBLE FOR PUPILS,
PARENTS AND PUNTERS

This book is deliberately seditious. There is no climate emergency. We are all environmentalists and we all want a better world for ourselves and the next generation. Pollution kills and no one wants pollution of the atmosphere, waterways and soil. By contrast, carbon dioxide is plant food. It is not a pollutant. How can it be dangerous if we breathe it in and breathe it out? Without sunlight, water and carbon dioxide there would be no life on Earth. To call carbon dioxide a pollutant is fraud.

Previous generations feared the cold. They knew that far more people die in cold weather than warm weather. The current generation of school pupils may be the first generation to fear warmth, something that humans have been seeking for tens of thousands of years.

We cannot afford to wastefully allocate our sparse resources to ventures that give us false hope and address false problems. We cannot be guided by activists who cherry-pick information to suit their ideology. We must be very wary of banks, corporations, traders and lobbyists seeking huge subsidies for schemes to reduce our emissions using our money. We must be very wary of those selfappointed saviours who claim that they know what is good for us. They dont. Carbon dioxide is a minor greenhouse gas. At least 95% of the greenhouse effect in the atmosphere is due to water vapour.

What we do know is that climate always changes, carbon dioxide has a decreasing warming effect with increasing concentration and that humans can have only a very slight effect on local climate (e.g. from land clearing or heat generated in cities). What is contested is whether increasing atmospheric carbon dioxide will have a catastrophic effect on global climate and whether the science is settled in the new field of climate science.

The last chapter of this book gives one hundred and one questions that young people should ask their teachers to ascertain whether they are being taught to think rationally, critically and analytically. If pupils are being fed activist propaganda, then they increase their chances of being unemployed and unemployable. Pupils can find out very quickly if their teacher is a dope or if the teacher is feeding them with environmental activist propaganda. This book is also for parents to ascertain whether their children are being fed environmental advocacy and political propaganda rather than being taught to think. They should ask childrens teachers some of the questions.

This book is also for the punter who has a good nose for political spin and nonsense. The punter is blessed with common sense and the punter will be paying for the economic fallout from the emissions trading and carbon tax funding scams so strongly supported by banks. The punter should ask some of the questions on talkback radio when some clown is claiming that we are all going to fry-and-die. The punter should ask some of these questions in
