Introduction
Red Dove, Tell Truth to Darkness is the exciting sequel to Red Dove, Listen to the Wind. This adventure is not just about Red Dove, but is also a tale of the need for acceptance and couragethe courage to speak ones trutha challenge that faces all of us on the journey to adulthood.
Set in 1891, the plot becomes a riveting ride filled with coming-of-age escapades and appearances by Buffalo Bill and Annie Oakleythe true rock stars of that era.
I have read both Red Dove books more than once and Ive loved them every time because they made it easy to imagine what life was like when my ancestors were alive. I shared Red Doves fear, pain, anguish, frustrations, and weaknessesas well as her victories, joys, and strengths.
Sonia Antaki has written another historical novel for ages 10-14, but any adult will enjoy a story that leads them to learn more about this colorful period, and I believe that Red Dove, Tell Truth to Darkness is a book that boys will want to read as well.
I am honored to have been of assistance to Sonia regarding the details of Sioux (Lakota) life during the late 1800s and I look forward to continuing Red Doves journey in the final book of the trilogy, Red Dove, Run Through the Fire.

Foreword
Although this trilogy is fantasy, based lightly upon historic events, it is important. It introduces young readers to Lakota culture without attempting to speak for it. At its root is a wonderful story about medicine and spirit, as opposed to magic. We can all relate to the spirit that exists in every living being, that connects the great and the small, and guides us throughout our lives.
Calvin Spotted Elk, Lakota, Descendant of Chief Spotted Elk, who led his people at Wounded Knee
In this, the second book in the Red Dove trilogy, our young heroine learns Woohitike, or courage, one of twelve sacred Lakota virtues. Life has changed rapidly for her, her family, and other survivors. In this tale, she is exposed to people from cultures vastly different from her own. Leaving the safety and security of her mother behind, she travels with her pony Wichinchala to far off lands with Buffalo Bills Wild West Show. At great personal risk, she must reach deep inside and find the strength and courage to speak her own truth. Red Dove, Tell Truth to Darkness is an adventurous and inspirational story that shows readers how true bravery can impact the world around us, shaping not only our lives but also those of others.

Why Dont You Leave?
F aster, girl! Fourteen-year-old Red Dove hunched over Wichinchalas mane, loosened the rope bridle, and kicked hard. Even in her starched gray uniform, she wasnt going to let a sixteen-year-old soldier boy beat her. Yah, yah! she yelled.
Together, earth flying, she and Rick sped across the schoolyard, through the open gate and up the muddy road with Ricks dog, Spirit, chasing at their heels.
The morning sun, the fresh-scented breeze, and the rush of freedom were thrilling after the prison-like boarding school. Red Dove laughed as her pony gained on Ricks bigger mare and pulled ahead.
