There are roughly fifty coffee roasters in Portland despite, or possibly because of, the fact that there are also fifty Starbucks stores in Stumptown, which just so happens to also be the name of the largest of the citys local roasters. We know this statistic thanks to Ruth Brown, my former colleague at Portlands alt-weekly Willamette Week. Perhaps thats a weird detail to include in a book about Oregons beer, but in a city so rich with breweries that one of its many nicknames is Beervanawhich really applies to the whole stateit speaks to the way Orego nians feel about and support all things handmade, small batch, and local, to the point of being from ones neighborhood and not just region. Im not picking on Starbucks, as they have served a vital function in educating a wide audience about specialty coffee and better technique in making it, especially when you consider that every supermarket still has tubs of instant coffee on their shelves. Nevertheless, here are the Portland areas independent coffee roasters available to caffeinate you at the sole or flagship stores listed below. Roasters without a store are listed with only their website.

I may have written this book single-handedly (well, I used one hand when it came to trying the hundreds of beers it took to research all of Oregons breweries, but both hands to type), but I didnt do it alone. Such an undertaking relied on the huge assistance and encouragement of many, chiefly my very supportive wife, Kimberley, a.k.a. Half Pint. The fact that she gave me her blessing to go off on journeys around the Great State of Oregon with a brand new baby at home wouldve been gracious enough. That she spent so much time helping to edit and guide the manuscript makes her deserving of some kind of wifely medal, which in this case is a bottle of The Abyss.
Speaking of editing, thanks to John Holl, my new editor at All About Beer magazine, for throwing my name into Stackpoles hat to pen the Oregon volume in the fantastic series of brewery guidebooks by state. Likewise, a huge vow of appreciation to Brittany Stoner (and Kyle Weaver) at Stackpole. Holl is the co-author of two such titlesIndiana Breweries and Massachusetts Breweriesso Id just like to say: Hey, you can fit two Indianas and three Massachusettses into Oregon! I guess that means I then owe him five beers. Speaking of All About Beer, although Id just published Red, White, and Brew: An American Beer Odyssey, that was the first beer magazine to publish me and set me on the path to being a freelance beer writer. Im grateful to publisher Daniel Bradford and contributing editor Julie Anne Johnson for the continued support. I look forward to some pints of that delicious North Carolina beer with you soon.
I cant thank enough my friends and colleagues in the Oregon beer writing and blogging community. The list starts with the Dean of American Beer Writers, Fred Eckhardt, who penned A Treatise on Lager Beers before the esteemed Michael Jackson and Charlie Papazian published their first books. Deep into his eighties, he remains active in the beer scene and his charitable birthday party, FredFest at Hair of the Dog, is not to be missed.
