FOREWOR D
P eople have been making art f or tens of thousands of years, since long bef ore paper and pencils even existed. The first artists scratched patterns and pictures on rocks, or smeared crushed stones or blood on to cave walls. Since that time, different civilizations have produced their own artand we can tell a lot about what life was like f or them by the artworks they made. Most societies have developed their own styles, traditions, and rules of art. So, if you learn what to look f or , you can of ten figure out roughly when and where certain works of art were madelike an art detective. Individual artists make art f or many different purposes. They might want to show religious or spiritual ideas, or what they believe to be right and wrong behavior . They might want to show others what particular people, animals, or objects look like or mean to them, or to record important events. Some artists simply want to make the world more beautiful, or to inspire reactions from the people looking at their art. Artists have even made art because they believed it would perf orm magic, or summon or please gods.

In this book, you will meet many artists who worked at different times and in different places, and who each created outstanding art. Many of the artists were poor , and did not make much money from their art. Others became rich from it. They came from all sorts of backgrounds. Some from poor fam ilies, some from rich. Some did well at school, others struggled. Some were unknown during their lives and became f amous af ter they died, some were celebrated while they lived. However , nearly all artists have one thing in common: They make art because they love it. I hope the artists in this book will inspire you to seek out art, and to make your own. Because art and artists enrich our world.

When they took their hands away , the shapes of their hands were lef t unpainted on the wall. Animals It is not known why prehistoric artists painted animals. However , some people think that they believed painting the animals they hunted would capture them, which would make it easier to catch the animals in real life.
