Summary of Everything We Keep: A Novel by Kerry Lonsdale

On their would-be wedding day, Aimee Tierney has to attend her fiancs funeral since he had an accident and died recently. The funeral is too much for her since in the church where she was supposed to have her wedding with James Charles Donato, she is part of her fiancs funeral. James brother Thomas gives her a big amount of money that was supposed to be included in James' will when they got married. Thomas suggests that she either realize her dream of opening her restaurant with it or travel the world. When Aimee is about to run away from the site since it is too much, a woman named Lacy meets and tells her that James is alive. She does not believe Lacy initially but the intensity in Lacys eyes makes her believe that the woman knows something. Lacy asks her to visit her as soon as possible and leaves her card with her. Nadia and Kristen, Aimees friends who were supposed to be her bridesmaids, find her.

Lacys card underlines her to be Lacy Saunders: Psychic Counselor, Consultant & Profiler in relation to Murders, Missing Persons & Unsolved Mysteries. Nadia keeps Lacys card to save Aimee from crazy people coming after her. Nick, Kristens husband and James best friend, takes them to the cemetery and drops Aimee home after the burial. Kristen and Nadia accompany her. Aimee misses James terribly. She wonders why James went to Mexico to see a client instead of letting Thomas handle the said client since it was Thomas job. James was the finance executive and it wasnt his job to oversee contract negotiations. However, she does not have answers to these questions.

Two days after James funeral, Aimee goes back to work at her parents pub, The Old Irish Goat, where she works as a pastry chef. Her parents, Catherine and Hugh Tierney, want her to take some time off and rest. She protests but they wont have it. She is shocked to hear that her parents have sold the restaurant. She asks them why they did not give her a chance to buy them out. They inform her that the restaurant is financially troubled and they did not want her to struggle and eventually file for bankruptcy. They want her to explore who she is since she and James had been together since she was eight.

Aimee recalls one day when she visited James mother Claire and met Phil, his cousin, there. She noticed something off about Phils demeanor. Claire wanted Aimee to cancel their wedding invitations since James had gone missing by then. Aimee learned that Phil had been living with them. Also, she remembers how James had promised Aimee before going to Mexico that he would pursue art, his passion, and quit his job when he comes back. Kristen and Nadia visit her. When Nick has picked up Kristen and Aimee is alone, she discovers Lacys card lying there and is reminded about what Lacy said to her. She also notices that the eight boxes containing James canvases have disappeared from the garage and only one remains. She plans to ask Thomas the following day about the boxes.

Days go by. At first, Aimee keeps going to her parents restaurant but then stops since she will have to find a new job. Aimee starts losing track of day and night and living like a zombie until she wakes up from her grieving state one day to find Nick mowing her lawn and Kristen visiting her as well. Aimee has also been cooking and feeding the neighborhood to take her mind off James and the pain of losing him. Kristen learns from Aimee about the check Thomas gave her. Aimee tells Kristen about Lacy and Kristen gives her the card of a Grief Counselor, Grace Peterson. Aimee cleans up and showers. She misses the appointment Kristen took for her with Grace but ends up visiting Lacy to seek answers. However, when she reads the sign on Lacys lawn, which mentions tarot cards and palm readings, she goes back home despite seeing Lacy. When she arrives home, Lacy is already there to return her Gucci wallet, which she had dropped outside Lacys place.

Aimee goes to Joes where she used to spend her Sunday mornings with James. Joes is closed and a sign says, For Lease. She decides then and there that this will be her coffee shop. She drops by Nadias soon-to-open gallery, which Nadia rented after James death since it was the only one available. James was going to open a gallery there and showcase his paintings. She meets Ian Collins, a guy who is doing a bad job of hammering. Ian has a weird French accent. When Aimee sees Ian, she finds herself to be drawn to the amber depths of his eyes when their eyes meet and feels immediate affection for him. She feels perplexed and ashamed. Wendy Yee, gallery owner, introduces her to Ian, who is one of the photographers whose work will be displayed in the gallery. Wendy and Ian invite her to the gallerys opening next week. Ian keeps gazing at her. After Wendy has left, Ian asks Aimee if she wants to have lunch. She refuses at first but agrees once she remembers how hungry she is.

Ian shares that he has been living in Los Gatos for a few years. They have lunch. He suggests that she open a coffee place in Joes old place, which was what she was thinking earlier. He pays for lunch and asks her to save money to buy his paintings next week. During lunch with him, she finds a business card of Casa del sol, a resort in Oaxaca, Mexico. She figures out it was Lacy who did that. Ian and Aimee part with the promise that they will see each other on Thursday, on the opening day of the gallery.

When Aimee talks to Nadia, the latter asks her to ask Ian out since it has been five months since James death. When Aimee Googles the resorts name on the card, it seems to be far away from where James went in Mexico. Thomas had retrieved James body from Cancun. She calls Thomas, who is in Europe. She wants to ask him about Cancun but cant do it. She finalizes the plan to lease Joes place.
