This history takes factual information provided by encyclopedias and other historical documents. Other reference material includes birth certificates, death certificates and census data which support the factual basis of this history. The war records and military history of individuals and their family members were also used in the determination of their contributions to the society in which they lived. Other research material included Wikipedia, Ancetry.com, wikitree.com, genealogy.com and my many brothers and sisters.
Two directions of ancestry history were investigated to gain the most effective approach to the design of this history. First the genealogy of Amye Grenville was traced to her origin of Charlemagne. Her marriage to John Drake VI allowed further investigation into his ancestry. Both were thoroughly pursued with vigor to determine their origins over the last 1300 years. The investigation provided by Earl Drake combined with my efforts has provided this history for your enjoyment.
Charles Martel the Hammer was the illegitimate son of Pippin the Middle of Herstal and his mistress Alpaida. He governed the Franks from 737 to 741 when his jurisdiction was replaced by his two sons Carloman and Pepin the Short. Charles Martels father had descended from Ansegisel and his wife Begga of Franks. In 743 the two brothers Carloman and Pepin appointed Childeric III of the Merovingian Dynasty as King over western and central Europe.
The assembly of Franks met with Pope Zachary to anoint Pepin the Short King who currently held the office of Mayor in 749. The Carolingian Dynasty replaced the Merovingian Dynasty in 750 with the anointing of Pepin the Short as King. He replaced Childeric III who was exiled into a monastery by Pope Zachary. In 753 Pope Stephen II replaced Pope Zachary upon his death. Pope Stephen II fled Italy to Francia appealing for assistance from Pepin. Pepin together with Carloman defeated the Lombards who ruled over Italy and reinstated the Pope in the Vatican. The Pope in turn anointed Pepin the Short as King and secured the royal patrimony for his sons and heirs.
Charlemagne, the eldest son of Pepin the Short was born April 2, 742 in Herstal, Wallonia which is now Belgium. The division of the Carolingian Dynasty would form the territories of France and Germany.
The Ancestral Line to William the Conqueror
Charlemagne the Great is the highest ranking Noble blood in my family tree. We derive our ancestral linage from the marriage of John Drake VI to Amye Anne Grenville whom she descended from the Holy Roman Emperor. Charlemagne was known by many names in his time due to the vast Empire he ruled over. Karl der Grosse by the Germans, Carolus Magnus by the Italians, King of the Lombards and Charles le Grand and Charles le Magne by the French. Charlemagne was born on April 2, 742 the product of the marriage between King Pepin the Short and Bertrada of Laon Queen of the Franks. King Peppin was born 714 and died September 24, 768 his Wife Bertha Bertrada de Laon was born 720 and died on July 12, 783. King Pepin was the son of Charles Martel the Hammer and descended from Pepin of Herstal.
Pope Leo III crowned Charlemagne as Imperator Augustus Imperator Romanorum Emperor of the Romans on Christmas Day during the celebration of the Nativity. He had been considered the Anti-Pope and was sought by the population of the Christian Church for his misdeeds. He sought Sanctuary and protection under Charlemagnes rule. Charlemagne was the protector of the church and spread Christian beliefs throughout his conquered territories pushing back the Muslims and Pagan worship. Charlemagne negotiated with the Romans and the Franks to drop the charges against Pope Leo III but decided to retain the titles bestowed on him as Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire.
Charlemagne was somewhat a scoundrel in that he had four wives at various times and six concubines. By his most impressive demeanor of six foot four he ruled over a family of eighteen children and a vast empire. Only four of his sons were considered legitimate heirs to the thrown having been conceived by his third wife Hildegarrde. Charlemagne died on January 28, 814 at Aechen in Prussia by illness and many of his children had preceded him in death.
Charlemagnes first wife Himiltrude bore him a daughter Amaudru and a son Pippin The Hunch Back. Amaudru was dispatched to a convent and not spoke of again. Pippin was born 769 and preceded his father in death in 811. Although Pippin had deformation of the spine he was held in high regard by his father and so named Pippin after Charlemagnes father and a name that signified royalty from his ancestors.
