Named One of Shutterbug Magazines Top Digital Imaging Books of 2008!

Capturing an image and getting the right exposure is critical and Jeff Wignall recognizes exposure as the secret for creating an image that captures a vision and shares it with the world. When you apply his techniques with patience, experimentation, and a focus on the outcome, you will begin creating images that reveal not only what you saw, but how you felt when you saw it. In fact according to Shutterbug magazine Exposure Photo Workshop may be the best book yet written about exposure. By learning to work with natural light as well as when to use flash you will confidently capture action, night scenes, rainbows, sunsets, and reflections like never before. With stunning images, Jeff Wignall shows you how to perfectly expose pictures in even the most challenging existing light conditions, including poor weather, using a flash, and even a section guiding you through using multiple wireless flash units. You can upload your own images to Photoworkshop.com and get feedback from other photographers.

Wignall starts by explaining the fundamentals of exposure and why its important. This leads into learning the basics of exposure controls. By the end of chapter 2, you will know how to control the exposure on your point-and-shoot or digital SLR camera. Chapter 3 walks readers through measuring light using just about any light meter and Chapter 4 delves into lens apertures and depth of field. The focus moves to shutter speed and subject motion. After Chapter 6, youll have the knowledge and confidence to turn off your cameras automatic settings and take manual control. Wignall then examines natural light exposures, discussing the intricacies of light quality, light direction, and time of day. As you approach more advanced exposure options, youll need the troubleshooting advice provided in Chapter 8, covering difficult situations such as metering challenges, handling contrast, and creating dramatic silhouettes. With more advanced techniques mastered, you can then approach night and low-light conditions and then examine special considerations such as the weather and natural phenomena. The book finishes strong with a comprehensive look at all things flash photography.

Acknowledgments
Its interesting that after completing a project as solitary as writing a book that there are so many people to thank, but there are lots.

First and foremost I would like to thank my friend (and former student) Mark Allin, Managing Director of Wiley, Asia, for introducing me to the nice folks at Wiley. Thanks also to Kim Spilker, Senior Acquisitions Editor, for offering the book to me and to Cricket Krengel and everyone at Wiley who helped in producing it.

Thanks to all of my former students: Ive learned far more from you than you have from me (trite, but very true). In particular, I would like to thank Tom Callahan, Jennica Reiss and Gavin Zau for contributing photos to this book. Nothing could make me happier than to see photos by my students illustrating one of my books. Their photos are first-class professional images in every sense of the word.

Thanks also to fellow photographer and author Derek Doeffinger for the use of his photos and for replying to my endless technical questions. My appreciation, as well, to my good friend Brian Oglesbee for continually reminding me that great photos are always the result of much hard work and imagination. His book Aquatique (Insight Editions, 2007) is among the most powerful monographs ever published ask your library to order it.

I am also very grateful to Alice, Brook, Julia and Sarah and their families for letting me use photos of them. Thanks as well to both the Perrigo and Cutter families its nice to have such attractive friends to photograph. Thanks to Professor Louie & the Crowmatix and Miss Marie for letting me use performance photos of them and for many years of wonderful music. Many thanks as well to Lynne and Sarah for helping to produce the sparkler photos (and for not getting burned fingers while we went through dozens of sparklers).
Introduction
During the writing of this book, an interesting thing happened that created an analogy in my mind for learning to make good exposures: my girlfriend Lynne rescued three completely feral kittens, tamed them and turned them into fun and loving pets. You might think the process of creating a meaningful exposure and domesticating feral cats are practically and philosophically unrelated, but theyre not.
