Cad leaned close so that his hot skin touched the cool silk of Amy's gown, his chest brushing against hers. She shifted to an angle; he followed, propping his hands on either side of her.
She fell on her elbows. "Ouch," she said. She was practically lying down, underneath him, which he figured was the best place she could be.
"You hurt?" he said, concentrating on her parted lips, full and rosy. When her tongue flicked out for a second, then disappeared, he almost moved in to suck it our again. "Maybe we ought to get you undressed like me and find out how serious it is."
Her eyes were concentrating on his bare shoulders and arms and his naked chest. "Goodness," she said.
"Oh, it'll be good all right," he said.

Chapter One
Cad Rankin was a dead man.
He caught the big one, a bullet to the gut, outside the Galveston bank he'd tried to rob. Toesup in the middle of a sunny, crowded street, he made one wish: Let it be over fast.
A boot prodded his side, and fiery pain shot through him. "Hairy thing, ain't he? Can't hardly see nothing but his eyes. Looks like a mean ole grizzly bear."
"More like a long, lean pile of rags. Sorry sonuvabitch."
That he was.
Eyes closed, the pain coming at him in waves, he waited towhat was it the preachers said?to cast off these mortal coils. Lordy, he hadn't thought of preacher talk since he was a boy.

Anyway, a simple outlaw like him didn't have much in the way of coils.
He held himself still, taking his miserable end as a just reward. What year was it anyway? 1880. That would make a nice round figure on his tombstone. Except he wouldn't be getting anything so fancy in a pauper's grave.
Not that it mattered. No one would seek out his final resting place. Parents dead, and Michael, too. A long time dead and forgotten.
