PASSION'S PRICE
"I told you the conditions for walking about my estate," Stefan said sharply. "You agreed to them. Do you always break your word so easily?"
"I did not break my word," Hanna said, her mouth set in a stubborn line. "I told you I would escape."
"You will not escape from me, Hanna. Ever."
The look on Stefan's face was so fierce and possessive, Hanna retreated. "May I return to my room now?" she whispered.
"You may not. You must first pay the price for your disobedience. Come here, Hanna."
Hanna shook her head warily. In a flash, his fingers shot out and caught her wrist, drawing her close.
"You will not disobey me again."
Hanna raised her eyes to meet his and gasped as she saw his silvery eyes had turned dark and turbulent.
"One kiss, Hanna," he whispered thickly. "That is all I ask."
"Kiss?" she asked, her voice sounding curiously breathless.
Stefan let his gaze roam boldly over her. Lord help him, he knew he was playing with fire, but he could not stop himself. "Aye, Hanna, one kiss is the price you will have to pay. Do you still dare to disobey me?"

Cultural Notes:
In Poland, the "ski" on the end of one's last name was an indicadon of nobility.
In most Slavic languages, female names always end in a. Therefore, since our hero's last name is Tarnowski, his sister's last name is Tarnowska.
The rank of Polish field hetman is equal to that of a general.

Prologue
London, England 1642
There was no fog in London on this crisp and frigid spring night so his view was unobstructed as he stood in the shadows of a rowhouse, ignoring the brilliant sapphire stars that glittered in the evening sky. His dark eyes darted up and down the street until he was satisfied that it was empty of passersby.
As he strode down the street, his richly cut cloak was unfastened despite the cool wind. His steps were sure and determined, his face twisted with a seething anger that boiled his blood, making him oblivious to the coldness around him.
Damn her, he thought for the hundredth time. She had dared to defy him and had almost succeeded. Almost, he reminded himself. It had taken him nearly five years, but he had finally found her.
He came upon the house he sought and paused, letting his jeweled fingers rest lightly on the wrought-iron gate. She was here in this house, within his reach. He felt

himself tremble with anticipation and took a deep breath to calm himself. Slowly, he opened the gate and walked up to the house.
Calmly, he raised the brass knocker and brought it down three times. Within moments, an elegantly dressed manservant opened the door. Upon formally stating his wish to see the lady of the house, the manservant immediately ushered him into the parlor. A slow smile curved across his face. No questions had been asked. Clearly, the manservant was impressed with the cut of his cloak and the sparkling jewels on his fingers.
Curiously, he looked around the room as he waited, his fingers trailing over the back of a heavy, ornate chair. She had done well for herself, even without him. The parlor was richly furnished and decorated with the utmost care and taste. Elaborately carved furniture was comfortably placed about the chamber and large, beautiful paintings hung on the walls. A delicate spinet stood in one corner of the room and he wandered over to it, lightly running his fingers across the ivory keys. Then, slowly, he moved to the hearth, holding his hands out to the warmth of the fire.
