It is hard to believe, but I am told there are people in the world that dont know anything about Star Wars. Now calm down; put your lightsaber away, its ok. Some of us are Trekkies, some of like other stuff like... Frasier or whatever else people watch these days. In any case, unless you have been hiding under a rock or living in North Korea for the past 50 years, you probably heard of Star Wars, even if you dont know a Jedi from a Sith. This short introduction aims to give you a brief introduction into the Star Wars universe and explain its characters and their relevance in the story. They have abstract names and live on plants made entirely in George Lucass head but they also have spirit and motives and the story follows the classic good versus evil script.
To date, 7 films have been released and 2 more are confirmed to follow them. To follow the story, you have to understand the principles behind what the films are about, and possibly ignore the fact that they made episode 4, 5 and 6 before they made episode 1, 2 and 3. That sounds confusing but it really isnt once you start watching. In all honesty it really is easy to watch, follow and understand despite names such as Qui-Gon Jinn, Emperor Palpatine and Han Solo.
In essence, all you need to know before you watch is that there is a force present in the universe, a binding, metaphysical, and ubiquitous power that connects all living things. Most have no connection with the force, it simply flows around, and they as they go about their business, but some have a higher connection to that force. Some people can manipulate the force and use it to move around objects and change peoples minds. Some people are so connected with the force that they become Jedi masters after years of training and they use this force for good, peace and prosperity for all. Some however, use the force for darker purposes; this is the dark side of the force and the Sith lords use the force to control, manipulate and threaten people for power and personal gain.
"The force is an energy field created by all living things. It surrounds us, penetrates us, and binds the galaxy together."
Jedi Master Obi Wan Kenobi.
Before we talk about the characters, the planets, the ships and the storyline, lets take a quick look at what made the Star Trek franchise so popular and how successful it actually was.
Star Wars is synonymous with science fiction fans the world over and the first movies spawned a legion of fans, gathering a cult like following all over the globe. Unlike Star Trek whose fans were generally more interested in the science behind the show and ideas about the future, Star Wars appealed to a wider audience and many considered that fundamental in its success. The galaxy is entirely fictional and the opening lines even mention that the setting a galaxy far, far away from a long time ago.
The first film was released on May the 25 th , 1977 and was not expected to be a hit by many in the film industry. Something like this had never been done before and George Lucas, the writer and director had trouble pitching the space opera to the big names movie companies. Lucas claimed to have the idea of creating a space western movie, inspired by science fiction books, comics and shows such as Flash Gordon.
Before we talk about the first episode and start to delve into the plot, just to put things into perspective about how successful Star Wars actually was, here are the amounts of money the first 3 films made:
May 25, 1977 Star Wars Ep. IV: A New Hope
Budget: $11,000,000 Global Earnings: $786,535,665
May 21, 1980 Star Wars Ep. V: The Empire Strikes Back
Budget: $23,000,000 Global Earnings: $534,058,751
May 25, 1983 Star Wars Ep. VI: Return of the Jedi
Budget: $32,500,000 Global Earnings: $$572,625,409
Star Wars is a classic story of good versus evil. The force can be used by those who can control it for good or for evil. This forms the basis of all of the Star Wars movies and each film introduces a few new characters. In the first 3 movies made, there were only 2 real bad men; Darth Vader, and the one pulling his strings, Emperor Palpatine. We will explain more about Palpatine as his character develops later on, but Darth Vader was present for the first 3 movies and proved to be great at being evil.
Darth Vader was voiced brilliantly by James Earl Jones in the first 3 movies that were made. He was an evil genius and used the force for power and chaos. He controlled an evil empire with fear and builds the Death Star in an effort to become the ultimate power in the galaxy. We find more about Vader as the stories develop but we dont find out how he became Vader until the first 3 episodes are release much later on. He has a raspy voice and breathes heavily due to the dark black suit and helmet that he always wear. In one small scene, we do get a little look at the injuries he has when his helmet is being lowered and he certainly looks super evil. He is merciless in his killing and can crush a mans throat with his mind, which he does when his officers question him.
Grand Moff Tarkin is the commander of the evil Empire, and he is in charge of the Death Star when Vader is away on business or hunting down rebels. He looks like an evil schoolteacher and runs a tight ship on the Death Star.
Throughout the series, there are many bad people but Vader is the most evil of them all. We find out later on how he becomes Vader and how Palpatine, the grey old man is pulling Vaders strings and controlling him. But now lets look at the good ones.
The character of Luke Skywalker character is played by Mark Hamill and you can sense from the early scenes that he yearns for a life of adventure, asking his adoptive family if he can leave the planet and join the rebellion like all of his friends. The fosters parents, knowing full well about Lukes past try to hold him back from the galaxy and protect him from suffering the same fate as his father. Luke will go onto to be pivotal in the next 3 films and even in the latest release, he has some part.
According to canon, which is the official storyline, Yoda, who you will find out about later, foresaw the coming of a new hope whilst on the search for immortality. He saw that Luke was going to be born and grows up eventually to lead the light side of the force against the dark. He also foresaw that Luke would have a twin sister and she too would be fundamental in the victory against evil.
Luke facts:
- His mother is Senator Padm Amidala and his father is Anakin Skywalker who starts as a good Jedi but turns to the dark side.
- Luke Skywalker was born on the asteroid of Polis Massa.
- Childhood friends include Biggs Darklighter, Laze "Fixer" Loneozner and Camie Marstrap
