The leadership capital index : realizing the market value of leadership: summary, description and annotation

When it comes to evaluating a firm, leadership matters.
We know that financial outcomes can predict about 50 percent of a firms market value. Intangibles like strategy, brand, talent, R&D, innovation, risk, and so on account for the rest. But leadership underlies them all. And despite how important we know it is, weve been forced to rely on subjective and unreliable ways to measure its impactuntil now.
In this landmark book, leadership scholar, author, and consultant Dave Ulrich proposes a leadership capital indexa Moodys or Standard and Poors rating for leadership. Drawing on research from investors and business leaders, and synthesizing the work of dozens of consulting firms and leadership experts, Ulrich analyzes two broad domains, each comprising five factors. The individual domain includes personal qualities, strategic prowess, execution proficiency, interpersonal skills, and fit between the leaders style and the organizations market promises. The organizational domain encompasses a leaders ability to create customer-focused cultures, manage talent, demand accountability, use information to gain competitive advantage, and set up work processes to deal with change.
Ulrich details rigorous metrics and methods for evaluating leaders on each of these factors. The result is a groundbreaking book that will be of vital interest not only to equity and debt investors but also to boards of directors, executive teams, human resource and leadership development professionals, government and ratings agenciesand of course to leaders themselves.

Much needed! Leadership has always been the X factor in gauging the health of any organizationwe know its vitally important, but we havent had a way to think about it objectively. Now we can compare apples to apples.

Cheryl Bachelder, CEO, Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen, and author of Dare to Serve

All investors who take their job seriously will want to read this book. Ulrich has closed a critical gap in risk mitigation with this comprehensive 360 for assessing leadership capability throughout an organization.

Sandy Ogg, Operating Partner, The Blackstone Group

Long-term-oriented investors understand that people lead, financial numbers lag. Thanks to Dave Ulrichs leadership capital index, we now have a more rigorous way to evaluate the people who lead and can make much better investment decisions.

Fred Trigueiro, founder and CEO, Archipelago Partners, Brazil

It is a remarkably comprehensive model. The Leadership Capital Index will be an important and immensely useful book not only for investors but for anyone needing to better understand the nature of leadership.

Hermann Hauser, cofounder and Partner, Amadeus Capital Partners

Dave Ulrich has written a foundational book. He has introduced the concept of the leadership capital index and brought together eight key elements of the index. Each element is carefully developed and ultimately put into a format designed for practical usage. As the CIO of an investment management firm specializing in publicly traded stocks, I am tasked with making investment decisions based on publicly available data. This means my investment team and I have to carefully choose only a few critical items to discuss with each corporate management team. We also hold our stocks for long periods of time; our approach is significantly dependent upon superior corporate leadership. Daves book will help us select the one or two key index elements for each potential investment and ask the pertinent questions. Refreshingly, Dave has left the door wide open for improvements in the index.

Frederick K. Martin, CEO and CIO, Disciplined Growth Investors

To investors and leaders who seek common ground

CONTENTS
FOREWORD

All of us in the investment world are continually challenged to find that single best share investment that will produce excellent profits and not result in losses for ourselves and our clients. More important, we strive to do that consistently not only for one company stock that we have purchased but for all of the shares in our portfolios. We therefore spend a great deal of time studying companies listed in stock markets all over the world. We pore over company audited accounts, examining the profit and loss figures as well as the balance sheets. The profit and loss numbers give us clues to the companys history of earnings and what kind of trends they may reveal. By calculating such ratios as return on assets, return on equity, net profit margin, and so forth, we also gain insight into the profitability of the company.
