Pollan, Michael. The Omnivores Dilemma (New York, 2006). The brilliant writing of Michael Pollan first opened my eyes to the modern, industrialized agriculture complex and his work remains the best account of the problems our society faces in relation to food production.

Duany, Andres and DPZ. Garden Cities: Theory & Practice of Agrarian Urbanism (London, 2011). My understanding and interpretation of the agricultural neighborhood was greatly influenced by Duany and the DPZ firm. Published by the Princes Foundation for the Built Environment, the book describes community plans and management that enables the interaction between agriculture, development and modern society.
Ibid The descriptions of the environmentalist, trendsetter, opportunist, survivalist come from Duany.

Merrill and Leatherby present an excellent map of land use in the U.S. in the online Bloomberg article. Several facts in the next few paragraphs are based on interpretations from the map and my understanding of their research behind it.

Peterson, Seligman et al wrote the textbook on the subject of human character strengths and virtue, now used in positive psychology courses at colleges and universities across the United States. It is an insightful and illuminating work in the growing field of positive psychology and a great influence on my thinking and interpretation of human values and strengths.

Diamandis and Kotler give an excellent account of the new technologies that will have a positive effect on the future of our planet, and the world and our future is not all doom and gloom as the media often portrays (to sell advertising- it keeps us glued to the TV and our smart phones). Diamandis and Kotler greatly influenced my thinking in this chapter.

CHAPTER ONE
THE AGRICULTURAL COMMUNITY
Agriculture is our wisest pursuit, because it will in the end contribute most to real wealth, good morals and happiness.
-Thomas Jefferson to George Washington, 1787
The organic, farm to table, eat your view movement has gone from niche to mainstream and changed restaurant menus across the country and around the world. Heres just one example from pop culture.
On an episode of the television show Portlandia, a young couple sits in a Portland restaurant about to order food from their waitress. The young woman asks the waitress a question about the chicken on the menu.
Is it USDA organic, or Oregon organic, or Portland organic?
