Preface
Does your resume wear blue jeans?
That's the question I asked in the Preface to my first book on resume preparation and job-search strategy, Does Your Resume Wear Blue Jeans? Since the publication of the Blue Jeans book, I've had the chance to speak to a variety of groups across the country on the art of resume writing and self-marketing. I've noticed in these groups a prevalence of women, many from my generation, who were leaving the home and entering or reentering the job market. They generally were the most attentive members of the audience. They invariably asked the most questions.
One question many asked was: "Why don't you write a book just for us. We got a lot out of the Blue Jeans book, but we'd appreciate a book that focuses just on our unique problems."
I noticed also that my own consulting services were frequently retained by women. Their backgrounds, they thought, were just too scattered, their jobs just too remote in time, their abilities just too unfocused for them possibly to write an effective resume. They felt a personal need for help in writing their resumes and launching their searches for meaningful employment.
Most of these audience members and clients feared the inadequacy of their backgrounds. After all, they felt, they had only had babies. They had only carpooled. They had only organized soccer leagues serving 2,500 children. They had only served as den mothers, chaired committees to improve school curricula, tended to household chores,

served the community, volunteered in church, saw to their children's emotional and intellectual needs.
Insignificant stuff like that.
Their resumes wore, well, apron strings. Not the obligatory navy blue suit.
