Leadership: Finding Your Sweet Spot
What does it take to move from being a good leader to a Great Leader!
In sports, the sweet spot refers to the area on a racket or club that makes the most effective contact with the ball. Your leadership sweet spot is when your actions have the most positive impact. You do precisely what is needed to produce the best results.
Some leaders operate at the extremes--doing too much, then too little. They centralize, then they decentralize, only to centralize again. Some leaders delegate, but then swoop back in and grab control. Too much coaching can be as bad as too little coaching! Too much direction can be humiliating and demotivating, while too little direction creates confusion.
Finding your leadership sweet spot in each situation is challenging. Needs vary, and individual skills and experience are different from task to task. Motivation can change from day to day, and what one person sees as a challenge, another sees as a walk in the park.
The best leaders learn to diagnose each unique set of circumstances and determine exactly whats needed to improve the situation.
When you find your leadership sweet spot, the outcome is awe-inspiring! Its a WOW! People say things like, Your guidance was perfect, You nailed it, and You did exactly what needed to be done.
The aim of this book is to help you (coach, consultant, executive, middle-manager, mentor, parent, supervisor, teacher, and team-leader) find your leadership sweet spot in each situation.

Introduction
What does it take to go from being a good leader to a great leader?
The right amount!
To grow healthy and happy plants, you need to provide the right amount of water, sunlight, fertilizer, and pruning. Too much or too little water will hurt your plants; too much or too little sunlight can cause plants to stop growing and die. The best gardeners learn what each plant needs to grow and blossom.
Similarly, leaders must find the right amount of coaching, direction, and empowerment to give each employee. Too much coaching can be as bad as too little coaching! Too much direction can be humiliating and demotivating, while too little direction creates confusion.
Aristotle made this point when he said, Anybody can become angry - that is easy, but to be angry with the right person and to the right degree and at the right time and for the right purpose, and in the right way - that is not within everybodys power and is not easy.
Here are the big questions you need to ask yourself:
As a leader, do I consistently serve up the right amount of whats needed?
Do I serve it up at the right time?
Finding Your Leadership Sweet Spot
In sports, the sweet spot refers to the area on a racket or club that makes the most effective contact with the ball. Your leadership sweet spot is when your actions have the most positive impact. You do precisely what is needed to produce the best results.
In The Zone: Evidence of a Universal Phenomenon for Athletes Across Sports, researchers defined the Ideal Performance State (IPS) as a state in which an athlete performs to the best of his or her ability. It is a magical andspecial place where performance is exceptional and consistent, automatic and flowing. An athlete [can] ignore all the pressures and let his or her body deliver the performance that has been learned so well. Competition is fun and exciting.
The Zone study surveyed 59 athletes from a variety of sports concluding that the athletes performed best when they were in IPS. They felt confident, focused, and relaxed, even during intense pressure. When leaders operate in their sweet spot, they are also confident, focused, and perform at their best.
Finding your leadership sweet spot in each situation is challenging. Needs vary, and individual skills and experience are different from task to task. Motivation can change from day to day, and what one person sees as a challenge, another sees as a walk in the park.
Some leaders operate at the extremesdoing too much, then too little. They centralize, then they decentralize, only to centralize again. Some leaders delegate, but then swoop back in and grab control.
The best leaders learn to diagnose each unique set of circumstances and determine whats needed to improve the situation.
Diagnostic skills include the following:
Asking the right questions
Making the right observations
Clarifying thoughts and emotions
Analyzing the data
Identifying whats working and what can be improved
Determining what attitudes and resources are needed to move forward
Doctors make diagnostic judgements prior to prescribing various medications and treatments. When symptoms and conditions change, doctors change their recommendations. Doctors follow a rational, systematic process to determine what will help the patient. The best leaders use a similar approach. They diagnose before taking action!
Leaders determine what changes are necessary and possible. They decide what is required to engage, energize, and empower people to change. And they make ongoing adjustments as conditions change.
The aim of this book is to help you ( coach, consultant, executive, middle-manager, mentor, parent, supervisor, teacher, and team-leader ) find your leadership sweet spot in each situation.
When you find your leadership sweet spot, the outcome is awe-inspiring! Its a WOW !
People say things like, Your guidance was perfect, You nailed it, and You did exactly what needed to be done.
When you operate in your sweet spot, your performance goes from good to great.
You achieve the most positive results!
The book is divided into two parts:
Part I: Finding the Right Spot
Part II: Finding the Right Ratio

Special thanks to all the leaders who shared their insights regarding finding and operating in their leadership sweet spot.
Part I
Finding the Right Spot
Too MuchversusToo Little
Are you doing too much or too little?
Where is the fine line?
Consultants and college professors often answer these questions with two simple words it depends.
How much direction should I provide? It depends.
How much work should I delegate? It depends.
How much coaching is needed? It depends.
Of course, the answer to these questions depends on the situation and the people involved. Each situation brings a unique set of problems and opportunities.
The context is crucial!
There is a long list of leaders who succeeded in one setting but failed in another. They didnt properly diagnose the new situation nor adjust their approach and style as needed.
Different circumstances require different approaches.
On a scale of 1-to-10, how adaptable are you to changing circumstances?
Finding your sweet spot is an ongoing process that requires you to make adjustments as you gain new insights.
Strive to become more aware of your thoughts, emotions, and actions in each situation. Whats your standard approach to connecting, engaging, and inspiring others?
