Introduction

W

ow, thats really hot! While sitting around the campfire at my cottage, I was reminiscing with my best friends wife about how I met Elon Musk and how it would eventually lead to our working together.

Whats striking about reflecting on life during fireside chats like the one we were having is that you often dont recognize the impact certain events will have on your journey. That s just the way it is, as you live life from one moment to the next. However, over time, you realize that the incremental succession of events along your journey can amount to the extraordinary and build lasting legacies for family, friends and society.

That afternoon I told her how I met Elon and his brother Kimbal when we were attending Queens University in Kingston, Ontario. I talked about how, besides becoming good friends, both Kimbal and I spent our summers operating College Pro franchises. For those unfamiliar with the company, College Pro touts itself as the original student-run painting company, allowing college students to earn a few extra dollars during summer break while learning invaluable business skills.

For me, the College Pro experience taught me business principles that would not only lead to lasting friendships, but also a lifelong success in business.

So why am I telling you this story?

Because even though today I am a practicing lawyer, I want you to know that my "qualifications" for writing this book has as much to do with my entrepreneurial background as it does with my law degree hanging on the wall in my office.
