CHAPTER 1
Why Is Being Successful Necessary?
I must warn you in advance, some of the truths laid out in this book are not going to be what you want to hear or read. They are going to be straight to the point, and feelings will be hurt; I guarantee it. However, I have always been known to be brutally honest, and, in fact, I think its one of my biggest strengths. A lot more can get accomplished in this world if more people would be honest. Ripping off the Band-Aid, in my opinion, is always better than pulling out the hairs slowly. So I hope you are ready for the truth to set you free!
Some may ask, Why is being successful even important? Why is it necessary to be successful?
I would break it down into the aspect ofWhat makes a human being get out of bed in the morning? What makes a human being tick? Is it the intent to get up and wander around all day long, looking for food and distractions, wondering whats next with regard to a diversionary tactic or something to make us pass the time without having to worry too much about being eaten? Obviously, this is at a base level of existence.
So, if that is what life is supposed to be, then why are we programmed differently? If all we are supposed to be is survivors like the rest of the animal kingdom, then why did the universe, God, or whatever you believe in, decide to make us have an inner voice that tells us we must move forward, we must be better, we must get better every day?
As I have continued to break down success, and human existence in general, I have developed a theory that I call The Five Levels of the Achievement Pyramid. If you look at human existence on a basis of purpose, there are five levels on which you can exist or live.
Dependency Level: We all come into this world naked, afraid, and weak, with no knowledge, skills, or abilities, and our first level of existence is complete dependency. Obviously, as babies, if we didnt have someone to take care of us and feed us, clothe us, shelter us, and protect us, we would have died very, very quickly. A baby in the wild would obviously perish within a matter of hours.
At this level, you rely completely on someone else for all your needs. Now, some people only need this for the first eighteen years of their existence, some need it longer, and some people never stop being dependent. Some people, unfortunately, and as sad as it is, are dependent their entire lives. They need someone to feed them, clothe them, protect them, and shelter them, and that is really the lowest level of existence. Unfortunately, there are many, many, many people who do not grow beyond this level. Im sure you even know some.
Survival Level: At this level, you grow beyond the dependency level, either because you choose to or because you are forced to. Obviously, if someone is not going to protect and feed you and clothe you, you are obviously going to have to do it for yourself. This level of existence is usually contrite with severe depression and unfulfillment, with zero goals or true self-worth. In this level of existence, you are simply waking up in the morning, not being happy about it, not being driven, and simply going out in the world with nothing to look forward to and doing the bare minimum that is required to survive.
What is the bare minimum to feed, clothe, and house yourself? Usually, living paycheck-to-paycheck on remedial jobsminimum wage or slightly abovewith no hopes, dreams, or goals. Again, this is only an existence and is usually marked with heavy depression, lack of self-worth, mental illness, and drug addiction. According to the Center on Addiction, there are nearly forty million people in the United States alone that have a substance-abuse problem, which is higher than heart conditions, diabetes, and cancer combined! The Willingway Foundation reports that the highest level of increase in heroin use occurs in Americans with an income of between $20,000 and $49,000. Also, according to Americas Health Rankings, suicides are up a staggering 25 percent in the last twenty years! With the US National Library of Medicine reporting that the highest ratios of suicide were, in fact, among the lowest income levels. This confirms that a lot of these issues will happen in this level of existence because there is nothing else to drive you and nothing else to look forward to. These sad realities must be addressed, and the causation must be known! One of the major reasons why I am writing this book is to help people get beyond the Survival Level and out of drug use and suicide. We have to stop pretending as if we dont know the cause. It is socioeconomics, plain and simple. We can change that, and I will fight to do so!
Comfort Level: This level is better known as the middle class, especially in the United States and other first-world countries. According to the US Census data, roughly 30 percent of the American population does rise to this level. This level is usually marked by people with education, degrees, and skills. Typically, here you will see tradesmen, craftsmen, and creative people. They will rise to a comfortable income level where they do not have to live paycheck-to-paycheck, typically making between $60,000 and $100,000 USD per year, which is enough to pay the bills and have a few months worth of savings, in case there is an emergency. They are able to afford a comfortable home, usually something in a middle-class neighborhood, and own a nice car. They have decent credit. They can go out to eat. They can go on vacations once or twice a year. This is a very, very comfortable level of existence, a very comfortable level of achievement.
Depression, alcoholism, and drug addiction are still prevalent, but it is less widespread than at the Survival Level. Interestingly, according to the Australian Journal of Public Health, alcohol abuse actually increases in the middle class. While no known reason exists, I surmise that it is due to increased availability as well as overall general boredom and the need for an escape. Typically, depression and unfulfillment are still rampant at this level due to the fact that there is zero growth. Once many people get to the Comfort Level on the Pyramid, there just is no further achievement, which means you will fall into depression. You will fall into the inability to be truly self-fulfilled. For many, growth stops, and you just simply wake up each morning, get on the hamster wheel, and start pedaling.
