Tips for Finding Remote Work
Theres nothing like going to work each day, knowing that how much money you make and the hours you work dependentirely upon you - especially when your commute is from thebedroom to your living room.
Many report jobs are just like that. Even forthose that do require a 40 hour a week commitment, there is stilltypically some flexibility. At the very least, you are in a muchless stressful environment by being at home.
So, how do you find remote jobs or freelancegigs?
While the leads in this book are a greatstart, there are things you can do on your own. This little quickguide will help you.
What Industry Appeals to You?
One thing that has come out of the pandemicthat works to your advantage is that remote work gained atremendous amount of popularity. As more businesses came on boardwith letting their employees work from home, they began to realizeits many advantages. This means that just about every industry willoffer some type of remote options for employment.
Look at the industries that appeal to you andstart to pin down positions that typically offer remoteopportunities. Career areas that are most often remote includecustomer service, IT, healthcare, recruiting, engineering, andproject management are all common remote positions. However, thatdoes not mean that there arent others. Just get in there and rootaround on the career sites of your favorite companies. See whatturns up.
Know the Lingo to Leverage Remote Jobs SearchTerms
It would be nice if everyone just used thesame terms for remote jobs, but that isnt going to happen anytimesoon. So in the meantime, it is up to you to figure out the termsthat different companies use:
Remote
Virtual
Telework
Partial remote
Mobile work
Work from home
Telecommute
Hybrid remote
Depending on what you are looking for youmight also add freelancer and gig worker to your list.
To search for specific jobs, you will want touse the title and include the word remote. You probably want to doseparate searches with each of your remote work search terms. Itsjust easier.
For instance, say you are looking for adeveloper position. The search term you use will look somethinglike this:
Developer (Remote)
Developer Manager
Developer (Telecommute)
Dont Get Tied Down to Location
Many job sites have the location as part oftheir searches. The good news is, many are now including Remoteas an option under location. Some have just the word Remote in thelist while others have USA-Remote or Remote-USA as well as othersimilar terms.
If it is not an option on the job site youare using, try typing Remote in the keyword box.
The point is if you can avoid the locationtrap. If you are truly remote you can work anywhere. Location isnot a problem.
Create Job Alerts for Remote Opportunities
Many top job sites like Indeed, Flex Jobs, and Glassdoor allow you to create job alerts to let you know whenjob openings that meet the criteria that you set have been posted. You may get the notifications via email, text, or through anapp.
Create your job alerts and make sure youinclude the term Remote so you can know when job opportunities thatmay be what you are looking for come available.
If You use Freelance Gigs to Fill In WhileYoure Looking, Do So Wisely
There is an abundance of freelance gigs outthere. They are a dime a dozen - and many only pay pennies.
Dont get sucked into freelance gigs that eatup your time and give you little in return. And remember this. Youcant pay your bills with exposure or experience. Anyone whotries to get you to take low-paying work for these benefits isyanking your chain. Dont fall for it.
Look at quality, well-paying platforms, andclients. If you arent sure what to charge, there are someresources in the next section that can help. There are more in thewriting section of this book as well. You are worth more than thepennies that some of these clients want to pay.
Working Remotely is a Skill
If youve worked remotely in the past, evenif just part-time, that is still a skill youve developed. Includethe experience on your resume and in the skills section, make sureyou include it as well.
You can also mention it in your cover letter, but briefly. Companies like to see that applicants have some remotework experience. It shows that they know how to manage their timeand they
It may take a little bit to get accustomed tolooking for remote jobs but keep at it. The more you do it, theeasier it will come.
A Quick Guide to Working Remotely
Working from home is nothing like working inan office or on-site. Thats both good and not so great. When youwork from home, there is a much greater temptation to goof off andtake a less serious approach to your work. And thatsunderstandable. You are in a more relaxed environment. Theres lesspressure. I get it.
