Chapter 1
About Benjamin Graham and Warren Buffett
The basic ideas of investing are to look at stocks as business, use the market's fluctuations [1] to your advantage, and seek a margin of safety. [2] That's what Ben Graham taught us. A hundred years from now they will still be the cornerstones of investing.
Warren Buffett
W arren Buffett is probably the best-known value investor today, but there are many others, including Benjamin Graham (Warren Buffett professor and mentor).
Benjamin Graham (May 9, 1894 September 21, 1976)
B enjamin Graham was one of the most powerful investors whose research in securities [3] provide the basis used in stock analysis today by all market participants.
Benjamin Graham was born in 1894 in London, UK. When he was a child, his family moved to America, where they lost their savings during the Bank Panic of 1907. Graham attended Columbia University on a scholarship and accepted a job offer after graduation on Wall Street. By the age of 25, he was already earning about $500,000 annually.
After the stock market crash in 1929 Graham was inspired to write a research book with David Dodd, called Security Analysis . In this book Graham has discovered the basis of value investing which involves buying undervalued stocks [4] that are likely to grow over time.
Another famous book by Benjamin Graham, The Intelligent Investor, has been considered the Bible of value investing.
In The Intelligent Investor Graham noted the most important thing, he wrote that the owner of stocks should think of the stocks, above all else, as beneficial part ownership of a business. With that way of thinking, the stock owner should not be too concerned with unpredictable movements in stock prices. True is that in the long term stock market is like a weighing machine, which means its true value will be reflected in its stock price in the long run. When you see that a stock is available on the market at a price which is lower than its intrinsic value [5] , a margin of safety [6] exists, and that is the moment which it makes it ideal for investment.
Graham's largest gain was from GEICO [7] , which his Graham-Newman Partnership purchased 50% of in 1948 for $712,000. The profit of his investment grew to $400 million by 1972, contributing more to the portfolio than all of Graham-Newman's other investments combined. GEICO was eventually acquired in whole by Berkshire Hathaway [8] in 1996.
