Introduction

I nvesting can be overwhelming for beginners because it is a really wide field. There are different types of investments to make and a lot to learn. Even seasoned investors are continually honing their skills to stay on top of the market. But not to worry! Thats because this book will teach you what you need to know as a beginner.

One of the biggest shortcomings of our educational system is the lack of financial education. Most people go through high school and even college without learning a thing about finances or investments. And they end up being workers who live from paycheck to paycheck. They never attain financial freedom.

In the world today, only a tiny percentage of people will attain financial freedom without investing. And these are mostly people who inherited a lump sum of money. For the average person, if theyre ever going to be financially independent, they have to invest their money.

You see, if you aim to retire early or be financially independent, you have to work round the clock to make money. But that is physically impossible. And that is where investing comes in. Investing is simply making your money work for you. Your money doesnt need to rest, and it doesnt go on leave or vacation; it just works. And oftentimes, it earns more than you do in your everyday job.

So, Im sure that by now, we have established the fact that investing is the path to financial freedom. The next thing is getting the knowledge to make profitable investments. And the first step to doing that is to know the investment options you have. That is what this book aims to teach you.

In this book, we are going to look at the terminologies you need to know before delving into the world of investments. Then we will go through the different types of investments you can make and an in-depth explanation of each of them. Where possible, we will teach you how to make money from these investments. By the time you are done reading this book, you should know the types of investments you would like to put your money into and what it entails.

In the first chapter, we will be doing a brief introduction to investing. Keep reading to take a step closer to your financial goals!

Chapter one
Introduction To Investing

N ot many people will stumble into financial freedom. For most people, they have to work, save, and invest. Note that it doesnt stop at just working. Because in actual reality, just working and earning a good income doesnt guarantee you financial freedom. You have to make your money work for you by investing.

The concept of saving is generally understood. You save money in a savings account, and you earn a return at a fixed rate with very minimal risk. Investing, on the other hand, requires that you commit your funds with the prospect of achieving your financial goals while taking a higher level of risk. Again, its all about making your money work for you.

Investing, while rewarding, can often be difficult and perplexing. Understanding the basics of effective investing is the cornerstone of reaching your financial goals, whether you want a new house, money for your childrens education, or financial freedom. Attaining these objectives should not be a matter of chance. To make sure that you hit your goals, it takes dedication, investigation, and patience. And, as with other things, you should prepare ahead of time.

Investing Terms

Before we get started on the different investment options, lets go through a few basic terms you need to know before investing.

Asset Allocation

Any investment that has the potential to generate a profit, such as a stock, bond, ETF, mutual fund, real estate, and so on, is considered an asset. The concept of balancing your investments to reduce risk is known as asset allocation. This is accomplished by diversifying your portfolio with various types of assets that optimize profit while minimizing risk.

Ask/Bid

The price of an asset is sometimes expressed as a Bid/Ask format. A buyers Bid is the greatest amount he or she is willing to pay for an asset. The Ask is the lowest price for an asset that a seller is willing to accept.

Exchange

An exchange is a platform where investors can buy and sell stocks, bonds, commodities, and other assets. Its a platform for brokers (both buyers and sellers) to connect with one another.

Bear Market

The term bear market refers to a market that is dropping or moving lower. This can happen during a recession or a public crisis, and it can endure for weeks or even years. Youre referred to as a bear if you believe the market will fall. This term can also be used to describe individual equities that you predict will fall in value, in which case you would be bearish on that stock.

Bull Market

The term bull market refers to a market that is rising or going higher. You are referred to as a bull if you believe the market will rise. You would be bullish about a stock if you believe it will rise in value.

Capital Gain/Loss

A profit or return on investment is referred to as a capital gain. For instance, if you purchased a stock for $500 and subsequently sold it for $900, you would have made a $400 profit. A capital loss is the same way: if you bought a stock for $500 and sold it for $200, your capital loss is $300.

Dividend

A dividend is when a company pays a portion of its earnings to its shareholders. Dividends may be handed out as a one-time payment, on a regular basis (e.g., every month, quarter, half-year, or year), or not at all, depending on the firm.

EBIT/EBITDA

EBIT (earnings before interest and taxes) and EBITDA (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization) are two often-used measurements that represent a companys profits, excluding certain costs. The figures are said to represent the firms core earnings.

Index

An index is a metric that evaluates the performance of a group of assets such as stocks, bonds, and other financial instruments. The Nasdaq-100, Nasdaq composite, S&P 500, and Dow Jones Industrial Average are some of the most well-known indices.

Market Capitalization

The market capitalization of a corporation is the total worth of all of its outstanding shares. The market cap of a corporation is derived by multiplying its current share price by the number of outstanding shares.

Margin

You must pick between a cash and a margin account when opening a brokerage account to invest. The term margin refers to the practice of investing with borrowed funds. The broker will provide the credit, and your entire account will be used as collateral. The expectation is that you will be able to earn a larger return with the borrowed money than the brokers margin loan interest rate, resulting in a personal benefit for the investor.

P/E (price-to-earnings) ratio

A P/E ratio is a valuation statistic that determines a companys value in relation to its earnings, usually expressed per share. If a companys stock is trading at $100 per share and earnings are estimated to be $4 per share, the P/E ratio is 25.
