Dear Reader,

This book is a little bit unusual for my colleagues and me.

You may already know SAP PRESS for its far-reaching library of introductions to new software solutions, practical guides offering consultants and business users click-by-click detail, and software programming books with quirky case studies. Books that look beyond the boundaries of the SAP space are a little bit outside our comfort zone.

But from my earliest discussions about this megatrend concept with the author team at SAP, I believed that it presented SAP PRESS with an exciting opportunity to reach a new audience. Readers who position their organizations for tomorrow's markets. Leaders who are scanning the horizon and discovering that the industry-altering trends that they once considered at a sedate pace are already here. Innovators who assess, pilot, or commit to new ways of doing business.

For us, the process of publishing this book has already prompted a few departures from our traditional workflows, such as new writing and editing partnerships and a custom interior design to showcase leading voices in the SAP customer and partner space. To borrow a phrase from the book, some of these changes may even become our next practices.

Bringing Business as Unusual with SAP to fruition has been my biggest publishing project of 2022, and could start a new topic area for SAP PRESS. So please reach out and tell me: What did you think about Business as Unusual with SAP: How Leaders Navigate Industry Megatrends ? Your comments and suggestions are the most useful tools to help us make our books the best they can be. Please feel free to contact me and share your praise or criticism.

Thank you for purchasing a book from SAP PRESS!

Preface

In 2022, we celebrated SAPs 50th anniversary. Fifty years in the software industry means that generations of technology have transformed enterprise computingfrom mainframes to client/server architectures, to the internet, and into the cloud. And we see the crests of new technology waves on the horizon.

Our solutions support and enable the daily operations of more than 400,000 customers. And what we consider business as usual today once was revolutionary and very un-usual. Real-time computing with SAP R/2 was disruptive when most of the world ran yesterdays data and last months analytics on homegrown software. SAP R/3, with its scalable client/server computing, displaced the monolithic mainframes. Integrated 24/7 internet-based businesses replaced the usual 9-to-5 weekday schedules. The cloud is paving the way to scalable and adaptable computing power, high-security data management, and continuous innovation, giving companies the agility and resilience they need for an increasingly volatile environment. The pace of change has increased dramatically in the last few years as enterprises navigate one shock after another resulting from COVID-19, the war in Ukraine, climate change concerns, and massive digital transformations.

But some things have not changed over the last 50 years and will remain timeless. We continuously monitor the social, business, and technical megatrends that drive the world. We think about the future of our customers business in their industries. We co-innovate digital solutions to handle business as unusual for the industry leaders who define intelligent business practices that deliver sustainable business value.

In this book, we examine eight megatrends that are shaping the world of business, the world around us, and the SAP solution portfolio. Analyst and author Vinnie Mirchandani has interviewed many experts and executives of SAP customers and partners and many of our own industry and solution leaders. Vinnie and our industries expert, Tilman Gttke, have compiled a wide range of perspectives to discuss and share a vision of how todays business as unusual will become tomorrows best practices, enabled by the full range of solutions from SAP and our partners.

Of course, we know that you, dear reader, are observing and evaluating megatrends from your own vantage point, so we look forward to engaging with you as we all explore our shared path into a digital future of intelligent, networked, and sustainable enterprises.

Thomas Saueressig and Peter Maier

1 The End of Business as Usual

Generations of business consultants have been making a living by analyzing and re-engineering business processes to find the next level of efficiency that makes their projects (and their fees) worthwhile for clients. If clients are confident that their business model is viable, that their products are competitive, and that their value chain is future-proof, then there is nothing wrong with this focus on how to best run a business within those boundaries.

Meanwhile, strategy consultants take a hard look at the foundation of a clients business models to analyze the product portfolio, to investigate market and technology trends, to design the business of the future, and to devise a smooth transformation path to take investors, customers, and employees along for the ride. Nothing is wrong with this approach either; realistically, no book should claim to offer a one-size-fits-all recipe that works for all clients in all circumstances.

In this book, we discuss a range of megatrends that influence many businesses across all industries, shape the strategy of intelligent enterprises, and transform the structure of entire value chains. We hope to start a discussion, not to deliver final answers.
