For over 34 years Ive engaged with thousands of small businesses through speaking, consulting, and my books. One thing thats become clear is most small businesses are started by someone with a strong love and aptitude in a particular field.
Its all well and good for people to do this, but I discovered a long time ago most of these people have two big gaps in their knowledge and experience regarding running a business. For one, a successful business person MUST have a strong focus on sales and marketing. Without those, there is no business.
Equally important, a successful business person MUST have full knowledge of his/her financial picture. Most Ive encountered dont. And too often, companies go out of business by not completely understanding their financials accuratelyinventory, pricing, cash flow, debt management, and recurring revenue, for example.
I dont teach financials. Ruth King does. I just finished her latest book, Profit or Wealth? and plan to recommend it to all of my clients, BFFs, and readers. This book will teach every one of them the most important approach to successful managing and understanding their business finances.
If you have a small business, you should read this, too.

At last, a book that breaks down the potential issues and pitfalls of running a business in easy to understand examples and illustrations. Profit or Wealth? should be a required must-read for every contractor who built a service business based on their skillbut arent yet truly comfortable understanding the accounting side of managing it. Ruth Kings insight and knowledge gained in working with businesses for over 30 years makes this book outstanding. Not only are her rules and guidelines practical as well as easy-to-follow, her ability to use real-life situations to demonstrate their purpose drives home her points in a way anyone can understand. Profit or Wealth? is a great book that should be required reading for every business owner.

Many business owners get caught up in the day-to-day activities of running the business. The problem is, without a strategy to build profits and wealth, you can work for many years and end up with nothing to show for it.
The focus of Profit or Wealth ? is on the end game. Read this book, apply the authors knowledge and many years of experience working with small businesses, and youll methodically build a valuable business that can be sold or passed along to the next generation.
Critical accounting principles are key. You need to understand what to do, and just as important, why. The book lays it all out, and explains what you need to pay attention to on an ongoing basis. Real stories demonstrate the difference this makesranging from success stories to businesses who succumbed to common pitfalls with disastrous results.
Profitability is what leads to building long-term wealth. But it takes more than accounting principlesto build wealth, you must create a stream of recurring revenue. Ruth explains what that means, and how you can create this for your own business.
If youre a business owner who wants both profitability and wealth, read this book, implement its principles and take charge of your destiny.

Kevin OLeary from the TV hit Shark Tank says there are three things you must know in order to convince him to invest. 1) You must know your business so well that you can explain what it does in less than one minute. 2) You must know what makes you different from every other similar offering in the market place and explain that convincingly in less than 30 seconds. 3) You must know your numbers and this is where almost every entrepreneur fails. But you wont if you read and study the simple yet critical concepts that Ruth lays out in this book. Its so easy to read.
I have worked exclusively with over 300 business owners over the past two decades and from now on, I wont work with them unless they read and understand what is presented in this book. If you dropped out of grade 9 you will understand it, and if you graduated with an MBA from Harvard, you will learn how to keep things simple yet effective.
There are lots of great books on management, culture, processes, accounting, vision or business planning, and Ive felt that Ive read them all. After 20 years working with business owners, considering every book Ive ever read, I find this book to be not just a good read, but a critical handbook for the beginning entrepreneur, or financially frustrated business owner. I will be handing it out to every business owner I know. I would recommend this book over mine, because my book is on how to manage people, but if dont read and execute on everything that Ruth says in this masterpiece, you wont have people to manage.
They say that pornography is difficult to define, but you know it when you see it. Thats the way I felt about accounting and finance concepts until I read this book. Now I can explain things in one sentence so that the person Im speaking with can understand. This book is brilliant!
