An Enterprise Architecture Development Framework: summary, description and annotation

We offer to read an annotation, description, summary or preface (depends on what the author of the book "An Enterprise Architecture Development Framework" wrote himself). If you haven't found the necessary information about the book — write in the comments, we will try to find it.

The book attempts to answer a few of the most asked Enterprise Architecture (EA) questions. What is the problem and why EA is the solution? What is EA and what is an EA framework? Which are the existing EA frameworks? What is SOA and Business Architecture? What is the BPM, Lean/Six Sigma, ERPs relationship to EA?
A proven EA Framework, the associated metamodel, a novel single page generic Business Architecture and enterprise reference architecture templates for business, people organization, IT applications and infrastructure layers are then provided. The framework looks like a content page showing the components of an EA as placeholders, without actually describing them, but illustrating how they fit into the whole. It enables navigation between business and the technology layers implementing it. Navigation makes possible technology alignment to business operation, change impact analysis and new business models implementation. The templates enable the professional to move straight into own Enterprise description phase rather than waste time on the EA framework determination.
The book then shows how to document and build an Enterprise Architecture: architecture principles, design method, best practices, delivery checklists, EA patterns, development process, tooling and repository, integration to the mundane solution architectures, typical use cases, a simple EA development example, how to measure the EA maturity and value delivered, what are the typical EA triggers and roadblocks and how to build an EA practice, its governance, organization, funding and site.
A strategy specification and enterprise roadmapping process is illustrated in order to identify the future states and the target architecture of the Enterprise.
The Enterprise Architect job description, selection criteria, leadership skills, politics of the job, cultural blocks and how to effectively sell EA are then discussed.
In essence, the book describes all aspects of why and how to build an Enterprise Architecture with emphasis on the fact that EA is more than IT: EA is about documenting and aligning the Enterprise business processes, organization and technology to deliver the strategic intent.

I enjoyed reading this book. It was as if Grigoriu had laid out all the business and IT elements that make up an enterprise on a table and then played around until he could fit them all together into a single cube an ingenious effort at puzzle solving

I would happily recommend this book to anyone who is already an experienced enterprise architect. This book is an excellent graduate review that will force you to think through lots of issues and consider how you might address them in your own architecture.

I would also recommend this book to someone who was interested in the issues involved in building a business case for an Enterprise Architecture effort the sections on benefits and costs are excellent and comprehensive

and Id also recommend this book to someone who wanted to learn more about how to classify stakeholders. The section on strategy and stakeholders is outstanding.

The Problem : today's unresponding legacy Enterprise in a world of increasingly increasing complexity, amount of information, rate of change and competition.

The Solution : the Enterprise Architecture (EA) offering streamlining, alignment, blueprinting, strategic planning, and agility through SOA, the target state of the Enterprise.

The book describes:

Picture 2 drivers, benefits and Business Case for an EA evaluating financial Payback and NPV

Picture 3 the Return on Enterprise Architecture (RoEA)

RoEA = Revenue arch /Costs arch

Revenue noarch /Costs noarch

Picture 4 a Single Page Enterprise Architecture, a synoptic view of the Enterprise operation

Picture 5 Enterprise reference maps, covering business and technology architecture templates

Picture 6 alignment of your on-going solutions architecture projects to the Enterprise Architecture

Picture 7 a navigable EA framework and its metamodel describing the Value Chains, Business & Operating Models, Functions and Flows resourced by Organization and Technology layers

Picture 8 classification of and mapping to other EA frameworks: Zachman, TOGAF, DoDAF

Picture 9 a unifying view of EA, Service Oriented Architecture (SOA ), Value Chains, Business Models, Processes (BPM ) and IT Architecture , patching the divide between the Business and IT

Picture 10 a best practices process for building the EA and SOA,, an EA development exercise, and how to use the framework for ITIL, M&A, Outsourcing, Start-ups

Picture 11 EA patterns, inhibitors, maturity models, politics & sell

Picture 12 a Strategy specification process and alignment to business activities, organization and technology .

There are a few books that take a broad perspective, but most focus on creating an IT architecture. An Enterprise Architecture Development Framework, by Adrian Grigoriu, is a pleasant exception. Grigoriu takes a very comprehensive view of things and works to show how everything can be integrated within a broadly conceived view of things .

About the book

Why this book

The book aims to answer some of the common sense business questions related to Enterprise Architecture. It attempts to solve the problem of why, what is, and how to build an Enterprise Architecture (EA). What are the issues? What is Enterprise Architecture? Why should an organization consider Enterprise Architecture? What are the trends and drivers of business change? What would be the benefits and the costs? What is the Return on Enterprise Architecture, Payback or NPV? Which are the factors inhibiting EA initiatives? And how to build the EA; good practices in the development of an Enterprise Architecture are discussed. Most of all, the book attempts to draw the Enterprise picture from business, technology and organization perspectives.

The book describes:

The Enterprise problems and the Enterprise Architecture (EA) solution

The drivers and benefits of EA

How to build a business case for an EA; introduces the formula for the Return on Enterprise Architecture (RoEA ) and calculates the Payback and NPV financial indicators, newly applied for an Enterprise Architecture development

A Single page logical Architecture to satisfy and provide the communications means and common vocabulary to all stakeholders

A Business Reference Map or a Business Template to help you structure the Enterprise Architecture according to commonly accepted patterns such as Value Chains in business, and in IT, multi tier client server architectures

An innovative EA framework, not only showing compatibility with major existing frameworks, but exhibiting a unifying view of People, Process and Technology architectures, linked together and described by views specific to each and every stakeholder, designed from an UML perspective and described in terms of Functions (what) and Processes (how)

A metamodel describing the links between artifacts and their entities and schema of the EA tool repository

A coherent view of many related Enterprise technologies: Business Process Management (BPM ), Enterprise Application Integration (EAI ), Service Oriented Architecture (SOA ), Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP ), Software as a Service (SaaS )

Mapping to other frameworks (Zachman , DoDAF , TOGAF, FEA ),

EA maturity models, triggers and inhibitors, EA politics, Enterprise Architects role and responsibilities

A Strategic Planning process driving the Enterprise Architecture transformation

The EA development process describing EA governance and Best Practices at every step

Integration of Solution Architecture designs, result of the everyday projects, into the Enterprise Architecture outcomes

The Virtual Enterprise concept, the Enterprise entirely built of outsourced functions, except Governance
