PREFACE
Why another wildflower book? Even though many attractive and helpful wildflower guides are available, most are so broad in geographical coverage that many local plants are not included. This is especially true for wildflowers of the cedar glades, important ecosystems found principally in the Central South. These plants, many of which do not occur elsewhere, are given special attention here.
Conservation should result from expanded information and awareness of any aspect of natural history. After all, does knowledge not lead to appreciation, and appreciation to the desire to protect? As the noted ecologist Paul Sears observed, "People seldom try to save anything that they haven't yet learned to love." Many rare and endemic plant species (and their habitats) of our area are threatened and require care and protection to ensure their survival.
