Introduction
UTAH WILDFLOWERS is a portable, visual guide to the festival of wildflowers that renew the mountains and valleys of northern and central Utah every spring and summer. The northern two-thirds of Utah contains the Wasatch and Uinta mountains, numerous smaller mountain ranges, and plateaus. Governmental lands encompass six national forests (including eight wilderness areas), one national park, two national monuments, one national historic site, one national recreation area, several protected areas managed by the Bureau of Land Management and the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and several state parks. This book identifies 102 common flowering plants which occur in these areas. Emphasis is placed on naturally occurring wildflowers, but a few alien species have been included because of their abundance and the fact that they are now permanently established. By using the index, common names, and color-keyed photographs, most users of this book will be able to identify and enjoy the flowers of the 21 northern and central counties of Utah (see map inside the front cover).

Why Wildflowers?
When viewing a spreading mountain meadow of glacier lilies mixed with spring beauties, the flower enthusiast may ask the question: "Why do we have so many species and what is the purpose of such delicately arranged petals, sepals, stamens, and ovaries?" Some humans may think that these colorful, sculptured parts are brought together in a flower unit to give us pleasure. Not so. Flowering plants have been evolving these reproductive structures for over a hundred million years, and this long evolutionary history has been linked to the evolution of animals. Today, we have the evidence that biological function lies beneath the delightful surface of these short-lived blossoms. In reality, perpetuation of genes is at stake. What seemingly turns on our human sensations is actually the result of natural selection producing through time an incredible array of precise biological adaptations.
