1. Introduction

Does your hairline seem to be receding with every waking day?

Or have you noticed that your comb always seems to retain more hair than normal?

Has it gotten to a point where you have been thinking of keeping your hair short just because you dont want anyone to notice that you have a problem?

Or have you resorted to wearing wigs or weaves because you cannot stand the many questions and stares that you receive from people when they notice your receding hairline?

Well, if you said yes to any of the questions above, you could be having a hair loss problem. Hair loss, also known as baldness or alopecia, is a common hair condition that affects men more than women. While it is normal for every individual to lose a few strands of hair daily, like 50-100, when you lose more, then there is definitely a problem. In most cases, hair loss occurs due to age, which is completely normal and should not be considered as a disease. In other cases where the hair loss is not due to age, the effects are normally temporary where necessary treatment can be applied to enable your hair to grow back.

This book will start by addressing causes and types of hair loss as well as the common symptoms of hair loss. We will also look at effective remedies for hair loss.

There is a lot to cover so let's get started...

2. Causes of Hair Loss

Before you can start treating hair loss, it is critical to understand the specific cause of your hair loss problem. Below are some of the common causes of hair loss.

Physical stress

Hair loss can be due to any physical trauma such as a car accident, surgery or an illness. In most cases, the hair loss is temporary and you can treat and grow back your hair very easily. Additionally, the cycle of hair life (growth, rest and the shedding phase) can be altered by stressful events thus pushing it to the shedding phase much earlier with this phase also lasting longer. In most cases, hair loss due to trauma often does not happen instantly, as it can take up to six months to become noticeable.

Pregnancy

Hair loss is also experienced during and after pregnancy often due to childbirth. You may experience hair loss during pregnancy probably because pregnancy greatly alters the behavior of your hormones thus resulting in altering of the hair cycle. Hair loss in this case is temporary so you need not to be worried.

Too much vitamin A

Now you know why they say too much of everything is poisonous. Research has found that excessive usage of supplements and medications that contain vitamin A can trigger hair loss. You are likely to suffer from taking an overdose of vitamin A from taking supplements than eating food high in vitamin A because supplements often have a higher amount of vitamin A (2,500 10,000 international units) than the recommended amount per day (5,000 international units). The loss of hair involved here is also temporary.

Lack of protein

Protein is an essential nutrient for overall body growth, which also involves the growth of your hair. If your intake of protein is low, your body tends to reduce the amount of protein being circulated to other parts of your body such as the amount assigned for the growth of your hair. The changes in hair loss are visible after approximately two to three months after reducing your protein consumption.

Hormones

Changes within your hormones caused by factors such as menopause, pregnancy, and switching birth control pills can result to hair loss.

Emotional stress

Emotional stress is less likely to cause loss of hair as compared to physical stress, but happens in rare cases. Emotional events that are likely to cause hair loss include death of a loved one, divorce, loss of income or even loss of a job.

Anemia

Women are most affected by anemia. Research has found that almost one out of ten women between ages 20-49 suffer from anemia. This is because of low iron levels in their bodies. Lack of iron means that blood is not circulating as it should and since blood circulation is important for hair growth (blood contains all the nutrients your hair needs to grow), this then leads to hair loss. In addition, hair does not grow as it should and starts shedding.

Hypothyroidism

Hypothyroidism is a condition in which your thyroid gland is underactive. The gland positioned in your neck produces hormones that are essential for metabolism in your body and growth and development. When it does not work well enough, growth of your hair reduces thus eventually leading to hair loss. You can have your doctor run some tests to confirm if this is the cause.

Over active immune system

Hair loss due to an over active immune system can also be referred to as alopecia areata in which the immune system tends to see hair as a foreign object to your body and attacks it thus leading to reduced growth.

Lupus

Lupus is an autoimmune disease, which also causes hair loss by mistaking hair for a foreign object. The resulting type of hair loss is often scarring which is very dangerous since it can be hard to grow back your hair if this happens. Ensure you consult with your doctor to ascertain that your immune system is functioning normally. It is best treated early before scaring starts to happen.

Sudden weight loss

Losing weight suddenly can cause physical trauma to your body. This can eventually lead to thinning of your hair. This can happen even if loss of weight is good for you. The methods you use to lose weight can also be a contributing factor since you might be doing extreme dieting thus missing some of the essential minerals and vitamins that are necessary for hair growth. The good thing about this cause of hair loss is that it is temporary and can be reversed quickly.
