Chapter 1
Understanding Hair Loss
How do you feel about being bald?
Some men may find being bald acceptable perhaps even sexy. However, there are simply those who really cant deal with baldness, especially women.
The hair has always been known as ones crowning glory. It emphasizes ones look thats why many women would jump at the next hair treatment that can glamour it the way advertisements show. However, even with all the treatments and how they take care of it, none can really stop hair loss.
What causes hair loss?
Hair loss, or alopecia, is a common problem among men and women. It appears during a certain period in their lives and can be caused by different phenomenon. This may either be due to natural causes or medical ones.
People normally shed around 50 to 100 hairs every day. This is not hair loss. But once you see bald patches, hair thinning, and excessive hair fall then you surely have it. There are many reasons why have this problem. Once the cause is determined, hair loss can also be treated. Before proceeding to the causes of hair loss, heres a look at the hair cycle.
The Hair Cycle
Understanding the hair cycle will help you know why hair loss occurs.
The hair cycle has three phases: anagen, catagen, and telogen.
The anagen is the growth phase which lasts from two to eight years. Almost 90% of the hair in your head is in this phase.
The catagen is the transition phase which lasts from two to three weeks. In this phase the hair follicle shrinks.
The telogen is the last stage. It is known as the rest which lasts around two to four months.
Hair Loss Risk Factors
Hair shedding is normal, however when it comes to hair loss this shows a disruption in the hair cycle. What causes it to be like this?
Hair loss can either be due to natural causes or medical ones.
Hair loss can occur naturally due to age. As you get older, your hair will start to grow thin and soon will fall off. Heredity and hormonal factors are also natural causes of hair fall.
Hair loss is more common among male. This is due to a hereditary condition known as male-pattern baldness. Women also can suffer from the same condition. For genetically susceptible people, certain hormones can even cause permanent hair loss.
Women are more prone to hair loss caused by hormonal changes and imbalances. This is more evident during and after pregnancy and after discontinuing taking birth control pills. Menopause is also another cause of hair loss due hormonal imbalance.
Medical condition can also cause hair loss. Some cases that can contribute these are scalp infections, thyroid problems, and other skin disorders.
Scalp infections are due to parasites that invade the hair and skin of your scalp. This leads to hair loss as it disrupts the hair cycle. Once infection is treated, hair grows back.
Thyroid glands help regulate hormones. If it doesnt work properly it causes hormonal imbalance which leads to hair loss.
