Encompassing nature, science, art, architecture, and spirituality, and illustrated with over 700 photographs and line drawings, The Hidden Geometry of Life illuminates the secret underpinnings of existence. In her trademark easy-to-understand style, mathematician Karen French shows how sacred geometry permeates every level of being, manifesting itself in simple shapes and numbers, music and sounds, light and color, even in the mysteries of creation itself. But these geometrical archetypes are more than the building blocks of reality: they are gateways to profound new levels of awareness.

Introduction
Man a being
in search of
meaning.
P LATO,
G REEK PHILOSOPHER
AND MATHEMATICIAN
(427 BC BC )
M ANY YEARS AGO A DOOR OPENED AND I WAS DRAWN into the fascinating language of numbers and their shapes. It became part of a very special journey for me; a journey that has led me down numerous roads of research into a wide variety of subjects, taken me to different countries and introduced me to many fascinating people. Out of these experiences The Gateway Series began to take shape. First was the Gateway to the Heavens and now, continuing with my journey, I would like to introduce you to my second book, The Hidden Geometry of Life .
This book is the culmination of years of research and the experience of using geometry in many different aspects of my life; be it in business and the organiza-tion of information, my art, in collating research and generally in how I view the world around me. I include personal insights and interpretations, backed up by the insights of current and earlier generations across different cultures and I have been able to introduce some amazing scientific models that have only recently been put forward. Pertinent information from Gateway to the Heavens is included, added to and organized differently, as it is now placed in a different context.
My intention is to provide an overall insight into this fascinating subject by distilling information from a wide range of areas and showing how various pieces of the puzzle fit together. Because of this I can only show you the surface aspects and key points of some very complex topics, such as fractals and yantras, but I hope that The Hidden Geometry of Life stimulates you to delve into greater detail for yourself.
My first book, Gateway to the Heavens , is about the meaning and purpose of key constituent parts of reality, made comprehensible through a few basic geo-metric shapes and principles. These are, essentially, the Square, two Triangles, a Circle, Cross and Spiral. As I explain in that book, those shapes are expressed in the symbol known as the Sri Yantra (see the illustration on the facing page), which translates as gateway to the heavens. These shapes have no colour, no substance; they are perfection in form, providing grids to form a Matrix on which space, time and Being are moulded. The Square represents space, the Triangle life and the Circle time. These same shapes can then be exploited as powerful symbols and tools, which you can use to expand awareness of your reality, since they structure it.
But reality is not sterile and monotone, comprising spheres, boxes and lines. From a few basic geometric shapes and rules the endless variety, sophistication and diversity of the myriad forms of Being come into existence. Natures palette has flavour, diversity, vibrant colour and rhythm to stir body and soul. Amazingly, although humans are minuscule entities in terms of the vast scale of the cosmos, we have evolved as Beings with the valuable capacity to reflect and question our situation; what we see, feel and experience beyond mere survival.

I wanted to understand more about what it is to be and the process of creation - photo 9

I wanted to understand more about what it is to be and the process of creation, such that the infinite variety and hue of forms of Being can become and individualize, yet still co-exist and be part of the cosmic, interconnected unity; I wanted to know how the geometric blueprint is accessed, used and transferred in the process of creation. I discovered that some of the answers revolved around the roles and purpose of sound, light and the Classical Elements of earth, fire, air and water. Central to these considerations is how these are combined with the formal, structural Gateway to the Heavens model, so that it is transformed into a vibrant, creative Gateway to Becoming model, assisting the production of boundless variety.
Underpinning everything is the amazing evidence provided by both the natural and man-made worlds that reveals how patterns, shapes, sound and light provide us with insight into the biggest questions we ask ourselves: What is reality? Why am I here? Is there meaning to life? I want to show you, through my own understanding of geometry and spiritual insights, how the answer is very much in the affirmative there is meaning and we can all access the tools to better understand it. And finally I hope that you will be surprised at the results of combining geometry with science, art and spirituality.
How to use this book
This book has been conceived as a journey through geometry, sciences, the arts and spirituality. As you progress through each part, I will be building up a picture that combines these disciplines.
