Acknowledgments
I would like to thank my husband, Marshall, for always supporting my endeavor of studying homeopathy, mostly in England. Thank you for the financial support and your willingness to allow my absence for such long periods of time. Thank you for patiently enduring the long hours I have been unavailable while writing this book.
I would also like to thank all the parents who have given me feedback on how to make this a user-friendly book. It has been invaluable. Parents are the best healers!
Special thanks to my teachers:

How often have you wished you knew more about medical matters so that you could ease or heal a problem without having to call or visit the doctor? Have you regretted that you were not able to take responsibility for minor and acute conditions? In these days when medical technology rules, we have all but lost a valuable heritage of knowing what to do in a crisis beyond handing over the problem to an expert.
In this practical guide, we have a means of taking back some of that responsibility for ourselves and our families. Shelleys book admirably covers just about anything acute witnessed in an average household. Within these covers youll find out how to deal with conditions that range from annoying to threatening. Youll find out why using homoeopathy is gentler, safer, and more satisfactory than relying on drugs. Youll get to know what remedies are the most useful to keep in your first-aid kitessential remedies for any household where accidents, trauma, bugs, and other crises happen with any regularity.
Shelley has written a book for everyone. It is user-friendly. It explains just what you need to know and adds no complication. Behind Shelleys wise words is the intention of offering an alternative and complementary way of thinking about health in the home. There is encouragement here for those who might feel reluctant to break the habit of relying exclusively on medical expertise. There is a wealth of experience too; for many years Shelley has lived, breathed, studied, and practiced homoeopathy in just the way she is advocating that you try. She has seen for herself within her own family and among her patients the beauty of homoeopathy at work.
I have known Shelley for many years and can honestly say that in my forty years of involvement in homoeopathy I have not met another person more devoted to or more passionate about its benefits. Though homoeopathy may go in and out of fashion, it remains always true to itselfthe gentlest possible cure in the shortest possible time, with the fewest reasons for intervention. It is a system used across the world; it is known in every continent of the globe; and it has advocates in almost every country, even in the jungles of South America and the islands of the South Pacific.
If you are new to homoeopathy, then you hold in your hands a book of discovery. If you already know something about it and want to learn more, then I cant imagine a better way than to refer to these pages whenever the need arises.
I wish you all the very best of health!
Colin Griffith, MCH, MHMA
In 1862 Congress passed the first Homestead Act, which granted the head of a family 160 acres of land if they cultivated it for five years.
The year is 1863. In the city of Saint Louis, Missouri, people wanting to take advantage of the Homestead Act are preparing their wagons for the adventure west. Most wagon trains did not have a doctor for the journey, and the doctors in the West were few and far between, especially in the Plains states. There is a pharmacy by the name of Luties, where the pioneers can buy a homeopathic kit and a book, The Domestic Physician by Constantine Hering, MD (the father of United States homeopathy). Pioneers used this book and remedy kit to treat any illnesses that might arise on their journey. Settling on a ranchsay out in the middle of Wyomingwould mean a total reliance on the homeopathic kit and the knowledge put forth in Dr. Herings book. To this day, homeopathy is still used to treat people and animals on ranches in Wyoming, where I was raised.
