ACKNOWLEDGMENTS
Writing this book required drawing on the wisdom and experience of two hundred years of homeopaths who built the solid foundation for this natural medicine. My thanks to every man and woman who contributed to this art and science.
Numerous homeopaths reviewed parts of this book, and I thank them for it: Randall Neustaedter, O.M.D., Michael Carlston, M.D., Ted Chapman, M.D., Jacqueline Wilson, M.D., Paul Herscu, N.D., Michael Schmidt, D.C., Louis Klein, R.S.Hom., Peggy Chipkin, F.N.R, Janet Zand, N.D., C.A., Stephen Messer, N.D., and Julian Winston; each contributed important information which was integrated into this book.
The material in this book covering the use of external homeopathic applications required detailed information about how each type of application is made. This information came from several homeopathic pharmacists including Michael Quinn, R.Ph., Mark Phillips, Sabine Hockenjos-Zogg, Forrest. Murphy, and Ron Ingino.
This book also required careful reviewing of the pediatric literature. I thank pediatricians Tom Carlston, M.D., and Richard Solomon, M.D., for their important input.
A special thanks to my editor. Donna Zerner, who helped me to say what I mean and mean what I say. Not only did she edit this book with authority, she helped me to get into my readers' minds and to write with clarity and detail.
Most of all, I thank my own pediatrician, my father. Dr. Sanford UUman. In addition to being a loving father, he encouraged the healer within me by giving me my first medical bag. Although my older brother often used one of the toy instruments to hit me with, my father taught me how to take the little white pills in the kit to help relieve the pain.
Needless to say, I have continued to use those little white pills ever since.

FOREWORD
More and more families are using homeopathy in America. They are discovering that this 200-year-old, internationally recognized approach to healing is safe, effective, and natural. The person most responsible for bringing homeopathy into the American spotlight is Dana UUman, M.P.H. His first book, cowritten with Stephen Cummings, M.D., Everybody's Guide to Homeopathic Medicines, was a landmark publication. I recommend it (along with a first-aid kit) to my patient's parents as the indispensable first book for understanding the general approach to homeopathic treatment.
Now, I have the privilege of introducing Homeopathic Medicine for Children and Infants as the second indispensable book, specifically for pediatric patients. Once again, UUman shares his remarkable ability to help families understand the inner workings of homeopathy in a simple, charming, and excellent manner.
Conventional pediatrics offers effective treatments for many serious conditions but, as every parent knows, it also has its limitations. These limitations are especially apparent in the office-based, acute care pediatric setting where greater than 90 percent of acute illnesses are viral in nature. Have you noticed your pediatrician hesitating after he or she has diagnosed a viral condition? This hesitation indicates a lack of options. Antibiotics are not effective against upper respiratory infections, influenza, or gastroenteritis. You can purchase a myriad of over-the-counter medicines, but most of them have side effects and merely suppress symptoms rather than heal your child. You could give Tylenol for your child's fever but the suppression of fever with Tylenol has been conclusively shown to hinder the immune system's response to viral infections. You could get Robitussin for your child's cough but a cough is the watchdog of the lung. Runny noses carry away millions of

infecting viruses. Vomiting and diarrhea purge the system of disease. (Of course, the main side effect is to make drug companies rich at your child's expense.) If your pediatrician doesn't hesitate, maybe he or she shouldand not just for viral infections. Homeopathy works for many other conditions as well.
Families need more options. Homeopathy is a wonderful option because homeopathic remedies are safe, cause no side effects or allergic reactions, and are inexpensive. They are easy to use because they taste good and, above all, they are curative, not suppressive. Rather than hinder the body's response to illness, homeopathy gives your child an immunological boost. This boost is just a little one. In homeopathy, extremely small amounts of natural substances are usedjust enough to get your child over the hill of his or her illness. After that it's smooth sailing as your child's healing powers complete the cure. Some of the hard-headed scientists are skeptical of this microdose medicine. They say it works by placebo. But very young children don't understand the placebo effect and, as an open-minded yet skeptical pediatrician, I have seen homeopathy work decisively and consistently with infants. There is also a growing body of scientific research that confirms such clinical observations. In part 1, Ullman tells why homeopathy makes sense and describes the principles of this wonderful art and science.
