Foreword
When Judyth Reichenberg-Ullman and Robert Ullman sent me this book, the first thing I noticed was how impossible it would be for me to spell their names. How could I write a foreword to a book if I couldnt get past the spelling of the authors names? But I reminded myself that one of the precepts I try to live by is never to shy away from the unfamiliar, so I tackled the names and learned how to spell them (I hope!).
The second thing I noticed was that this was a book that had Ritalin in its title. Usually such books attack the use of Ritalin and other stimulant medications. Since I am an expert on the treatment of ADHD, and since I do prescribe stimulant medication for some of my patients, it seemed odd that the authors would ask me to write an endorsement for a book that I imagined attacked what I do in my practice. But, once again, I reminded myself of my precept not to shy away from the unfamiliar. So I read the book.
I am very glad I did.
This book taught me a great deal. Before reading it, I knew almost nothing about homeopathic medicine. This book opened my eyes. Now I know some of the basics, and I want to learn even more. I even want to look into the possibility of finding a homeopathic physician to join my practice.
I will continue to recommend, as my first-line choice, the use of stimulant medication to treat ADHD. The track record of these medications is superb. Ritalin and other similar medications, such as Adderal and Dexedrine, have changed millions of lives dramatically for the better, in both children and adults. I know this because I have seen it up-close in my practice for years. I know that these medications work and that they work well. I also know that they are very safe as long as they are used under proper medical supervision.
However, stimulant medications are not for everyone. About 20 to 30 percent of children and adults with ADHD will not respond well to stimulant medication, so they need an alternative. Also, many people, for good and not-so-good reasons, refuse even to consider taking stimulant medication because of all the bad reports they have heard about them. These people also need an alternative.
Ritalin-Free Kids provides such an alternative. This book will really open your eyes to the possibility of homeopathic medicine, not only for treating ADHD, but also for treating a number of emotional and learning problems, as well as some behavioral problems like anger outbursts and bedwetting.
It is not hocus-pocus. Homeopaths have produced respectable scientific literature that deserves greater public and professional attention. I hope this book will help the field gain such attention.
Beyond that, I hope this book will help open peoples minds to the possibility of seeking help from a homeopathic physician.
Drs. Reichenberg-Ullman and Ullman have written a clear, balanced, and persuasive book. They are not polemicists, and they do not want to run down conventional medicine or its practitioners. They simply want to offer their own valuable experience as clinicians and to call attention to the research in their field.
I believe they have done an excellent job.

Preface
In some schools, as many as 30 percent of the children are on Ritalin.
Does this epidemic of attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder reflect something new? Are we just diagnosing better? Are the latent weaknesses of the human nervous system becoming overwhelmed by the pace and complexity of life in the information age? No one has enough time. We are flooded with sound and video bites. There is more to do than anyone has time for. Kids dont have time or space to be kids. The expectations are enormous. Each of us can experience how our nervous systems are overflowing with the stress this environment creates. Although there are similarities among peoples strategies, each of us has our own unique way of coping and adapting.
People with ADHD manifest their distress differently depending on their unique constitutions. Many are over-stimulated, distracted, and restless. Others become hyper-vigilant, withdrawn, and compulsive. Others act out, become disruptive or aggressive. All have trouble with self-esteem in their struggle to function. All these various presentations might be labeled ADHD. Despite the diversity, the conventional approach boils the problem down into a single diagnosis, which is typically treated by a single class of drugs. As long as medications are continued, the symptoms are somewhat controlled, much to the relief of the child or adult, teachers, and parents. Few patients ever outgrow their need for drug therapy. Many stop because of the side effects, limited effectiveness, or to try something different.
Before you give your child stimulants, read this book. Ritalin-Free Kids describes another approachone that respects and takes advantage of the diversity of people with symptoms of ADHD; an approach that stimulates the unique adaptive mechanisms each person carries within. Homeopathy is a system of medicine that is highly individualized and can help people move toward optimal health. The case examples in this book demonstrate that, when used alone or as a complement to conventional therapies, homeopathic medicines can improve the function of people with ADHD to the point where conventional medicines are often no longer necessary.
