There are many aspects of life which require us to distinguish between memories of different events, such as deciding whether you locked the door or only intended to lock the door. Source monitoring, or identifying the source of a particular memory (was the event experienced? related by someone else? or simply imagined?) is a cognitive skill that develops across the life span. In this book, the first to integrate research on childrens source monitoring, readers will find an accessible overview of source-monitoring theory and findings from the research programs of leading investigators in this area. The programs of research cut across different methodologies (e.g., nomothetic, individual differences, clinical) and are applied to a wide range of issues in childrens lives. Particular emphasis is placed on the effects of source monitoring on eyewitness memory and identification, learning and knowledge, and the development of a theory of mind.

Preface
Children need to be able to integrate information from different sources to build up a reliable knowledge base. In some situations, however, children need to be able to distinguish between different sources of information if they are to function competently in everyday life. They may need to know, for example, whether they have done their homework or just dreamed that they had, whether mom or dad spoke to them, or whether they learned information from a teacher or from a television show. Until now, the research on children's such source monitoring has been presented as scattered journal articles and as such, the picture of the development of source monitoring has been somewhat piecemeal. This has been the source of frustration for many scholars of children's source monitoring, and so the idea for this book was born from a need to provide a coherent account in this area, In this text, then, we sought to integrate current knowledge on children's source monitoring. We aimed for an easy-to-understand overview of source-monitoring theory complemented by critical discussions from an international set of leading investigators. Their research programs cut across different methodologies (e.g., nomothetic, individual differences, clinical) and are applied to a wide variety of areas of children's lives in which source monitoring is an important skill. Particular emphasis is placed on the effects of source monitoring on eyewitness memory and identification, learning and knowledge, and theory of mind development. This book was written at a level accessible to undergraduate and graduate students of psychology, researchers, and anyone interested in children's memory and applications of research in educational and forensic settings.
