To my patients, who have taught me the power of the human spirit.
To my friends and colleagues, Mitch Gaynor and Lee Lipsenthal, who in their short lives strengthened me with their wisdom and love.
To my brother, Dominick, and my cousin, John, who taught me to celebrate each and every day of this human life.
To Rauni Prittinen King, my friend, colleague, and co-visionary in creating a health care system that is the essence of science and compassion.
And to all my colleagues who are courageous enough to stand strong and deliver care focused on health creation for humanity and the planet.
CONTENTS
For many years, Mimi Guarneri has traveled to some of the most remote and impoverished areas of the world to help those in critical need of health-care services. Her noble work goes beyond the finite number of lives she saves and heals on each mission. Their health is our health. Their behaviors and survival methods have a profound effect on the overall health of our planet, just as our own habits do. We are one world.
As you start your own step-by-step journey to optimal health, remember that human health is intimately connected to the health of the planet, which is in rapid and serious decline. For 40 years, I have been one of many voices warning society about the impending environmental crisis threatening our world. We are now at a crossroads concerning environmental issues in general, and climate change in particular.
This is not an issue we can continue to ignore or dismiss. We are running out of time. Our planet is in need of healing now.
Air pollution levels are at an all-time high and getting worse. Over the past few decades, our ecosystem has been speaking out in a number of ways: record hot temperatures, devastating hurricanes and typhoons, major droughts, unprecedented snowfalls, and more. The summer Arctic Sea ice pack has decreased by more than 30 percent since the 1980s. Records tell us that average temperatures worldwide are rising; if this trend continues, by midcentury, no ecosystem in known history will ever have seen such a warm planet. We are heading into uncharted territory.
The record drought in California in recent years and its adverse impact on the state, one of the most technologically advanced regions of the world, is a stark reminder that everyone, not just the poor or the poor nations, is vulnerable to drastic climate changes.
There has long been talk about addressing the problem, but little has been done in the way of action. We have delayed taking significant action for so long that if we dont do something in the next few yearsnot the next 50 years or the next 10 years, but the next few yearswe will be pushing the ecosystem to extremes it has never seen.
What needs to happen before we as a society wake up and decide that enough is enough? Part of the problem is that we believe the air we breathe belongs to everyone. If the air in our homes were polluted, we would call someone out to fix it. But when the air on our planet is polluted, we expect someone else to take care of it.
When the planet gets too hot, the privileged among us can protect ourselves with more air-conditioning. However, there are three billion poor people in the world who are living in tropical countries with no access to indoor climate control. When the sea level rises so high that we lose entire islands, we can build homes high on a mountain. We will lose some money but not our lives. Yet many others are one hurricane or one drought away from extinction.
It is a moral and ethical issue on many dimensions. We inherited a beautiful planet. When we die, we will be handing the next generation a damaged planet with extreme air pollution, contaminated oceans, devastated rain forests, mountains without snowpacks or glaciers, and entire species that have disappeared. Generations to come will be adversely affected, since the carbon pollution from fossil fuels and the resulting climate changes can last for more than 1,000 years. They will wonder why we ignored compelling scientific evidence and advice to mitigate. The costs of mitigating the changes are so low compared with the damages that they will find it impossible to think of us, their ancestors, as intelligent life!
