What was said of the earlier editions of this work this edition should be fun for other dedicated Cordwainer Smith fans and helpful to dedicated Cordwainer Smith scholars. Alan C. Elms, Science Fiction Studies ...this is one of the most entertaining reference books around. It should delight all of Smiths fans. Locus Certainly a competent reference work for those inclined or an interesting read for Smith fans. Niekas it impelled this reviewer to immediately reread all of Smiths stories, and if it does so for others it is a most valuable book indeed.
Steve Carper, Fantasy Review It is the attempt of this concordance to bring together all the people, places, things, and concepts in the science fiction works of Cordwainer Smith together with exegeticalin some cases, highly speculativecomments. Anthony Lewis, Concordance to Cordwainer Smith Never, ever read anything written by a man who will use a word like exegetical! Richard E. Geis

I use the term concordance advisedly since it has a secondary religious meaning very important to this authors works. It is the attempt of this concordance to bring together all the people, places, things, and concepts in the science fiction works of Cordwainer Smith together with exegetical-in some cases, highly speculativecomments. For consistencys sake I have not included the contemporary novels Ria and Carola written as by Felix Forrest nor the spy thriller Atomsk as by Carmichael Smith. These are out of print but will well repay the effort of locating them in a used-book shop (always, of course, assuming that you can still locate a used-book shop), or via eBay.com, Alibris.com, or one of the other Internet auction and sales sites. This edition covers all the storiesincluding those first printed in The Rediscovery of Man . It also updates the bibliography and adds some secondary references.
This work has been in progresson and offsince 1968 and was first presented at the Secondary Universe conference of the Science Fiction Research Association in 1970. I have worked on it since in spurts of enthusiasm interspersed with the necessity of earning a living and helping to run science fiction conventions. More exegesis is always welcome and readers are invited to contribute thoughts and effort. Special thanks are due to Sandra Miesel and Richard Harter for their aid and encouragement over the years. A few notes on the Higher Criticism: it is reasonable to assume that all the stories in the canon are true in the best meaning of the term; to believe otherwise leads to nonsense. Are we to believe that Winston Churchill, Sherlock Holmes, and George Bernard Shaw are fictional? If the reader wishes to believe that Cordwainer Smith was a Lord of the Instrumentality cast back in time to our age and who wrote of the history and fables of his past from memory then I will not argue with such a person.
It also behooves the careful reader to treat apparent contradictions rationally that is, pay no attention to them. They are clearly artifacts of one of the following:
- Typographic and/or editorial errors on the part of persons known or unknown between the author and the reader.
- Minor slips in the memory of the authorquick now, which came first the War of the Spanish Succession or the War of the Austrian Succession?
- Deliberate attempts on the part of the author to disguise events or people for the sake of preserving the appearance of free will, (the world is not yet ready wrote Dr. John H. Watson, and this is still true).
Throughout the book you will find two-letter codes referring to the work from which the information was gathered. The meaning of these codes is given immediately following this preface. Anthony Lewis
