About the TOEFL iBT
The TOEFL iBT is a comprehensive test of your knowledge of English as it is used in higher education settings. It contains separate sections for Reading, Listening, Speaking, and Writing.
Reading and Listening sections test your understanding of written passages you read on your computer screen and spoken passages you listen to using a special headset. Reading and Listening passages are all on topics typically encountered in North American university settings. These sections of the TOEFL iBT use multiplechoice items to check your understanding.
The Speaking section tests your ability to speak on common personal and academic topics. Some of the items test only your speaking skills, while others ask you to integrate into your responses information you read on your computer screen, listen to using a special headset, or both.
The Writing section tests your ability to write on common topics. One item asks you to write on an academic topic, integrating information from spoken and written sources. A second item simply asks you to write about a topic of general interest.
The sections of the TOEFL iBT, item types, and time limits are summarized in the following TOEFL iBT At a Glance chart. For more information on each section of the test, refer to the appropriate chapter.
