AP Biology With 2 Practice Tests Barrons Test Prep - image 3

The owl appears next to topics that provide helpful background information and illustrative examples. See for more details.

As you review the content in this book and work toward earning that on your AP BIOLOGY exam, here are five things that you MUST know above everything else.

Barrons Essential

The process of evolution drives the diversity and unity of life.

Darwins theory of natural selection is evolutions major driving mechanism.

Evolutionary theory is supported by evidence from many scientific disciplines.

Phylogenetic trees and cladograms graphically represent evolutionary history.

The genetic code is universal because all living things descend from a common ancestor.

Evolution explains how all life is so similar and also why so much diversity exists.

Biological systems utilize free energy and molecular building blocks to grow, to reproduce, and to maintain dynamic homeostasis.

Reciprocal processes of cellular respiration and photosynthesis cycle H2O, O2, and CO2.

Surface-to-volume ratios affect the capacity of a biological system to obtain resources and eliminate wastes.

Selectively permeable plasma membranes regulate the movement of molecules across them, and maintain internal environments that differ from external ones.

Negative and positive feedback mechanisms maintain dynamic homeostasis.

Molecules, cells, and organs coordinate activities for the fitness of the organism as a whole.

Cells communicate by generating, transmitting, and receiving chemical signals.

Signal transduction pathways link signal reception with cellular response.

Nervous systems sense, transmit, and integrate information.

Cells of the immune and endocrine systems interact in complex ways.

Living systems store, retrieve, transmit, and respond to information that is essential to life processes.

Genetic information is passed from parent to offspring via DNA with a high degree of accuracy, although some mutations do occur.

DNA directs the production of polypeptides at the ribosome by an elaborate process.

The cell cycle is complex with highly regulated checkpoints.

Most traits derive from gene interactions that are more complex than what Mendel described.

The expression of genes is controlled by cell signaling, transcription factors, alternative splicing of pre-RNA, and environmental factors.

Biological systems interact, and these systems possess complex properties.

Populations, communities, and ecosystems interact and respond to changes in the environment.

Mathematical operations can be used to quantify interactions among living things in the environment.

Interactions between living organisms and their environments result in the recycling of matter and the movement of energy through food chains.

The introduction to this book provides an overview of the AP Biology course and exam (including the Big Ideas, Enduring Understandings, and Science Practices). It also includes:

A list of the features of this test preparation guide

A preview of what the exam questions look like

A detailed description of the exam format

Instructions for tackling questions that involve math

Information about how the exam is graded

Specific tips for achieving success on both sections of the exam

This introduction will not only prepare you for what to expect in your AP Biology course and on the exam, but it will also set you on your path to understanding biology and developing the ability to think like a scientist.

Theres a lot to learn and review when preparing for this exam, but do not stress! This book will provide you with the review and practice you need to fully prepare yourself for this test!

The AP Biology course and exam are organized around a few underlying principles - photo 4

The AP Biology course and exam are organized around a few underlying principles called the Big Ideas. These ideas encompass the core scientific principles, theories, and processes that govern living things and biological systems. For each of the Big Ideas, Enduring Understandings incorporate core concepts that are necessary to support the Big Idea. The Big Ideas and Enduring Understandings are highlighted throughout ), are also important to review. While they are not required content as per the official College Board curriculum, they do help reinforce concepts that will be tested and they serve as excellent examples for you to cite when writing your answers to the free-response questions. In addition, your teacher may use illustrative examples to help get his or her point across. As a result, your teacher may teach different illustrative examples than another AP Biology teacher would. Finally, the six Science Practices
