Foreword

My motivation for writing this book is a personal one: this is the book I wish Id been given when my three boys were young and I first discovered the range of foods that, between them, they arent able to eat.

For them, and as a coeliac myself, I have learned how to adapt our family life and eating patterns without compromising our health or enjoyment of delicious foods. I feel I am lucky. As a qualified nutritional therapist and a chef, if anyone was going to be able to create homely, appetising and nutritionally balanced allergy-free family recipes, it was me. So many of my clients and my friends havent had the benefit of all that professional training. I want this book to give some of the insight and practical help that I am lucky enough to have just because of what I do.

But, the book is much more than just a great free-from recipe book. I have also trained with the Institute of Functional Medicine, which has meant that I also wanted to include information about why allergies develop. I believe that if you can understand how a food allergy, sensitivity or intolerance works in a childs body, and address the underlying imbalances that are its root cause, you can reduce that childs allergic potential and optimize health for good. While your child may never be able to eat his or her particular allergen foods, with simple dietary and lifestyle changes, it is possible to make dramatic differences to overall health and ensure that he or she grows up strong and full of energy.

All parents want the best for their children. Being diagnosed with a food allergy can feel very daunting not only for a child, but for his or her parents too. Thats why Ive included plenty of practical advice on living with and taking control of a food allergy such as how to avoid cross-contamination, cope when travelling, eat safely away from home, and manage parties and family events without anyone feeling like they are missing out.

I also wanted this book to be positive. Instead of focusing on what your child cannot eat, I want you to go away feeling confident enough to explore all the nutritious foods he or she can enjoy. When you cook your family meals from scratch, youll find that they are tastier, more nutritious and often naturally freefrom. I hope that by encouraging you to celebrate the pure joy of eating real food, you and your children are more likely to cook together. Being with you in the kitchen and helping you while you cook, allows children to grow in confidence, and to develop skills and healthy eating habits that will last them a lifetime. One of the greatest joys for me is seeing my own boys making fabulous meals for themselves and others.

I encourage you to read the book from the start, no matter where you are on your childs allergy journey. I hope that every morsel of information is another step to a healthy, nutritionally balanced and utterly delicious future for you and your child.

Introduction

The aim of this book is to guide you through the various types of food reaction that may be affecting your child so that you can not only eliminate culprit foods from your childs diet and substitute in interesting and nutritious ways, but address underlying imbalances in your childs whole body to transform his or her health. This book is divided into three parts.

The first part, What does it all mean?, breaks down each of the different types of food reactions, their causes and symptoms. I then explain whats happening to your childs immune system, risk factors for each reaction and why the gut plays a crucial role in the development of allergies. This section also includes my route to resolution how you can identify the underlying imbalances involved in your childs food reactions and symptoms and how to restore balance in order to reduce your childs allergic potential and ongoing symptoms.
