Each supercharged ingredient is a natural food, but it contains high concentrations of nutrients so that when you add just a small amount to a juice or smoothie it intensifies the benefits of the other fresh ingredients. There are supercharged foods to help you whether youre aiming to maintain a healthy weight, or to energize your body, boost mental and physical performance, feel radiant or support your immune system. If you include one of my supercharged juices or smoothies daily, this is all youll need to kick-start your health. I have been designing supercharged drinks like these for my clients for years and have repeatedly found that people benefit from taking them regularly. The simple ways to make a difference
Supercharged juices and smoothies are a surprisingly easy and satisfying way to reboot your health. Juices are gentle on the digestive system and readily assimilated by the body. The juice combinations in this book use a wide range of vegetables with some fruits, making a blend that will optimize the nutritional content of the drink without drastically upsetting blood sugar levels essential for good health and maintaining a healthy weight.

Greater power from smaller doses
The recipes in this book have been developed using over 40 supercharged ingredients, plus fruit, vegetables, nuts and seeds. Many of these foods work synergistically in the body to provide optimum nourishment. My focus is on using whole foods and colourful, nutrient-rich ingredients preferably organic to maximize the health benefits of each drink. You need only include small amounts of the supercharged foods to have noticeable beneficial effects, because they are incredibly nutrient dense. Calorie per calorie they contain a vast quantity of concentrated beneficial nutrients to support good health compared to fresh and, especially, processed foods, which are high in calories yet devoid of nutrients.
Supercharged foods also contain a broad spectrum of vitamins, minerals and phytochemicals (natural chemicals with antioxidant properties that are found in plants). These include everyday foods (such as blueberries and kale) or less familiar foods that are available as extracts or powders (such as maca and chaga). Antioxidants found in many of the supercharged ingredients are compounds that protect the bodys cells from damage by molecules known as free radicals. No matter how healthy your lifestyle is, every cell in your body is constantly bombarded by harmful chemicals. Free radicals are the chemical by-products of your bodys own metabolism as well as being created from environmental toxins. Excess free radicals are a problem, because they attack the body, damaging key cellular molecules such as DNA. By protecting the bodys cells from free radicals, antioxidants play a role in preventing the development of chronic diseases, such as heart disease and cancer, and help to slow ageing.
Many of these ingredients are also functional foods foods that support a particular function in the body. It is well documented, for example, that the herb maca is an adrenal adaptogen, which means that it helps the body to handle stress and to cope with stressful events.
Powerful foods from the past
Supercharged ingredients are not a new fad. In fact, many have been eaten by indigenous cultures for thousands of years and have a long history of therapeutic use. Chia seeds are one example. They have been enjoyed for centuries by cultures throughout Central America. Known as the running food, chia seeds and water were the main ingredients that fuelled Aztec warriors in their conquests. Today, we might think of them as a new discovery, but these foods were once everyday staples.

At the back of the book you will find an at-a-glance illustrated list of all the drinks with a star rating for each of the following benefits: weight loss; cleansing; radiance (anti-ageing); energy; immune health; brain health and stress. On you will find a guide to the key health categories included under each symbol.
