PART I
Introduction
Introduction
Congratulations! Because you bought this book, you obviously are interested in pursuing a career in nursing. We offer our congratulations because it is a smart choicea field in which the opportunities are increasing annually, unlike many other career fields.
You have the choice of many different areas of nursing, which we will discuss shortly. More than two million registered nurses practice in this country, and according to the U.S. Department of Labor, more new jobs are expected to be created for registered nurses than for any other occupation. Thus, by the time you have received your degree, you probably will have a pretty good chance to get a job right away.
How to Use This Book
A quick glance at the contents page will show you that this book is divided into several sections. The first section is this introduction, wherein you learn about the different types of questions and how to answer them. In addition, you also garner information about the career of nursing and the different areas that you can follow. The second section contains the subject review material. Each of the major areas is presented in an easy-to-understand chapter with plenty of review questions. The single, most important approach to doing well on any test is to answer as many questions as possible that are similar in approach to those you will encounter on the actual test. We have provided these questions at the end of each review section, along with answers and explanations. Many of the answers you will know on your own from information you have already learned. Some of the information will be in the review chapters, and some of it will be new to you, but you can learn the information from the explanations of the answers.
The third section contains the Practice Tests, two full-length simulated exams. You should take each section as you would an actual exam. Each section is timed, and it would be helpful to take the tests in a quiet room, with no distractions. The purpose of taking these tests is to help you become familiar with the types of questions you encounter on any nursing school entrance exam, and the more you practice with the types of questions, the better you will do on the final test.
One word of advice: read, understand, and memorize the directions. Some of the directions are straightforwardanswer the questions to the best of your ability. Others may be more complex, and it is the more complex directions that tend to confuse people, and unfortunately, take time away from the actual exam. Therefore, if you have memorized the directions, you wont have to spend additional time reading them and trying to figure out what is being asked of you.
The last section is the appendices, and we have provided lists of dozens of different Nursing Associations as well as State Boards of Nursing. Both are excellent references to keep. The associations cover many diverse areas of specialization, and a quick glance at the names probably will surprise you at the many different areas of nursing. The State Boards of Nursing are responsible for licensing, and its worth contacting your local state board for any available information.
