By the time the auctioneer opened the chair for its first bid, anticipation and excitement already had brought tears to the eyes of the sellers. It was suitable the room at the Waldorf Astoria New York, in which the auction took place, was lined with gilded covered walls and bejeweled sconces like a counting room at Gringotts Vault.
For weeks before the auction, I watched as journalist after reporter after television news crew visited the chair and broadcast its simple text: I Wrote Harry Potter While Sitting on this Chair. It was impossible to miss that J.K. Rowling herself placed two gold and green lightning bolts to bookend the name of one of the literary and cinema worlds greatest characters: Harry Potter.
Dont worry if that phrase is new to you: Harry Pottery is the collecting genre that includes all things related to this wizarding world. Whereas rare items sell between $10,000 (a complete set of all seven UK Harry Potter titles) and $43,000 (a first edition, first printing of the first book, Harry Potter and the Philosophers Stone), values for mass-produced Harry Potter collectibles are also on the rise. Assorted collectibles produced in 2001 in conjunction with the first eight Harry Potter movies are deep and diverse. The most valuable and rare items include: limited-edition original movie posters, baseball caps, movie props, LEGO sets, lamps, holiday ornaments, first-edition book sets, and even period bronze sculptures are increasing in value on the secondary market.
Did you know?
In the U.S. alone, there are more than 160 million Harry Potter books.
Demand is so strong that items with even peripheral ties to the films and books are seeing an up-tick in interest and value. The market for mystical-looking flags made 70 years ago and other antique, vintage, and retro round eyeglasses similar to those worn by Harry, yet produced decades before the original book series, now are sought by adult cosplayers. These fans are seeking more collectibles and new ideas for ever more elaborate costumes and collections. Successful replica companies have opened to meet demand for movie prop weapons and wands, and even these items have begun increasing between collectors ... but there is no replacement for the real thing.
Harry, Hermione and Ron show their Hogwarts House pride in this snap from the film,Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. Costumes and props from the film are hugely valuable following worldwide tours and exhibitions.
Back at the auction, as the hammer fell, I watched the sellers burst into tears. The auctioneers cry of sold for $394,000! for Rowlings chair set a world record and raised the ceiling on the value of Harry Pottery. (For more about the chair and photos, see .)

CHAPTER 1
BOOKS
J.K. Rowling is a serious student of witchcraft, magic, divination, and alchemy.
Finding the real philosophers stone has been a mission for alchemists for centuries. Grindylows are not friendly mermaids. Heroes are not heroes until they learn of their mysterious past, for heroes must suffer a traumatic event and rely upon supernatural help to succeed on great and dangerous journeys.
It is no wonder that Harry Potter and Voldemort carry a bit of each other inside them. The struggle is real, my friends, and their explosive relationship in Harry Potter and the Sorcerers (or Philosophers) Stone launched millions of fans into a wonderful world full of mystery, spells, and tortured characters.
Hard to believe it all started with just 500 copies.
The first printing of the first edition of the British version of the initial Harry Potter novel was the result of an extremely small press run on June 26, 1997 by Bloomsbury in England. Rowlings hugely successful novels about a boy wizard scooped up most childrens literature awards in the UK and in the U.S. after its publication under the title Harry Potter and the Sorcerers Stone in 1998. It stayed near the top of the New York Times Best Sellers list for most of 1999 and 2000. Like the succeeding novels in the seven-book series, it was turned into a feature film, making stars of its three young main actors and engaging a host of major British actors.
