The principal aim of Streetwise Russian is to provide a glimpse into Russian slang at the dawn of the 21st century. This book is not designed for students who are just beginning their journey into the Russian language and culture, but rather for students who have a good foundation in Russiannormally accomplished in one to two years of formal Russian study.

Nevertheless, beginning students with limited Russian proficiency can benefit from the contextual examples, colloquial expressions, and cultural notes in the book. It is important to note that this books aim is not to teach obscenities or all forms of Russian slang or to serve as a slang dictionary. However, vulgarity is common in the Russian language. Therefore, many obscenities, or argot, are found in this book. They are intended to serve as conversational examples in natural, contextual settings, particularly among Russian youth. At some point, every student of Russian will encounter Russian slang.
