Track 1 is an introduction to the sounds of Korean. Listen to this before you start and come back to it at later stages if you need to. The Hangeul alphabet consists of consonants and vowels which combine to make syllables. The letters that make up an individual syllable are written together in a square shape. All words in Korean are composed of one or more syllables. The pronunciation is shown in the official romanization system. You will find an overview of the script and the pronunciation in the reference section on , but dont expect to take it all in at once. Concentrate only on some of the more recognisable syllables you meet in the Key Words for the moment and build up gradually from there.

Look carefully at the script while listening to the audio, connecting the image you see to the pronunciation you hear.
