Dear Reader,
My parents were storytellers. My father described in detail the pig that tried to gobble him down (nonfiction), and the adventures of a brother and sister, Jack and Tack (fiction). My mother inspired with a picture book about a little train engine, and later with books about the mysteries of deer and dogs and horses. I told my own children stories of a bullfrog who rescued a baby, and of an alabunny (half gator and half bunny) who saved the frozen swamp.
In my career as a professional writer, enthusiasm for children's stories has seemed to guide my pen. I have written books about children living in the woods, living in haunted houses, and even living on the moon!
Our daughter Eva entertained the family with stories of fairies; later she became my editor, and eventually my writing partner.
In this book we share what we have learned: how to capture your best ideas, develop them, and present them to the publishing world. Writing for children begins with stories in your heart. We help you bring those stories to life and share them with others.
Sincerely,
These handy, accessible books give you all you need to tackle a difficult project, gain a new hobby, comprehend a fascinating topic, prepare for an exam, or even brush up on something you learned back in school but have since forgotten.
You can choose to read an Everything book from cover to cover or just pick out the information you want from our four useful boxes: e-questions, e-facts, e-alerts, and e-ssentials. We give you everything you need to know on the subject, but throw in a lot of fun stuff along the way, too.
We now have more than 400 Everything books in print, spanning such wide-ranging categories as weddings, pregnancy, cooking, music instruction, foreign language, crafts, pets, New Age, and so much more. When you're done reading them all, you can finally say you know Everything!

Dedicated to Mary Elizabeth Gordon
Luke thanks:
My insightful colleagues in the Writing for Children and Young Adults track at Spalding University's MFA program: Louella Bryant, Joyce McDonald, and Susan Campbell Bartoletti. Lucille Penner for sharing secrets of writing nonfiction for children. My children and grandchildren for providing me with an endless treasure trove of stories.
Eva thanks:
Neil Gordon for welcoming me to the writing program at The New School University, and for talking to me about writing and publishing whenever I knocked on his office door. Kristy Davis for reminding me that writing books is a goal worth striving for, and that reading books is good for you. Also for cake. My brother and sister-in-law, Clay and Sarah Wallin, for lending me their house to write in over Christmas week 2009. Scott Mendel for introducing me to the business of book publishing from an agent's point of view.
Luke and Eva would both like to thank:
Our Acquisitions Editor, Lisa Laing, at Adams Media, for her speedy question-answering and assistance at every stage in the process; our attentive and helpful agent Katelynn Lacopo for bringing this project to us and for making herself available throughout its completion; Lloyd Kelly, Jr., for inspiration, ideas, and friendship; Sena Jeter Naslund for guidance and wisdom; and Mary Elizabeth Gordon for ongoing life support.
Create characters you truly love, hate, admire, and fear.
Tell stories you yearn to tell: feel the desire of your protagonist to reach a goal; fear the obstacles blocking that path; show the details of the struggle.
Choose small events in the world you know, or large events on the world stage, to inspire your stories. The key is that they speak to you, and move you.
Read, read, read read books written for the target age group, set in your chosen historical period, and of the type of book you want to write.
