Chapter 1 What Are the Tools You Need?

In woodworks, you do not need to have all the tools in the world to do it. All you need is to identify the appropriate tools to be used in your project. You might think that having limited tools will make you helpless, but this is actually where the challenge comes in to utilize the very limited resources you have. You may not notice, but in the process you will appreciate that you have more than enough materials than what you think you need.

On the other hand, when it comes to buying tools, it is advised not to get an entire set during single purchase. You may determine first what tools you need for a project, thus acquiring more and more tools but of different types in the process. This will also allow you to take good care of the tools you have. For example, you have twenty chisels in the shelf, and accidentally you broke the one you usually use. Since you have nineteen (19) remaining chisels in the shelf, the probability is rejecting the broken chisel and getting a new one. Unknowingly, with the given scenario, you already have a pile of useless tools stored in your drawer. But if you only have the tools you need, you will just be responsible in taking care of those, and saving money at the same time. Aside from that, you must also be keen in choosing the quality of your purchase because this really matters in the long run.

For beginners, the following materials are necessary: ruler, try-square, hatchet, straight-edge, knife, two to three chisels, gouge, smoothing plane, screwdriver, spoke-shave, panel saw, hammer and nail set, bit-brace and three to four bits (twist drills are advisable for smaller sizes), countersink, few bradawls and gimlets, rasp and half-round file for wood, three-cornered file for metal, oil-stone, and glue pot. These are actually the basic ones that should be present in your toolkit whenever you plan to do woodwork. Another important but inexpensive combination of tools for woodwork is Odd Job/s. It consist of combined features of sundry tools all in a single pocket-able tool which includes the following: try square, miltre square, t-square, mortise gauge, miltre level, marking gauge, inside square, plumb and spirit level, beam compass, depth gauge, and precision steel ruler.

However, you will feel the necessity of having a few more tools to make your work better, but still depending on the work you will do. The following can be added to your toolkit: fore-plane, block-plane, splitting saw, mallet, back saw, draw-knife, compass, one or more firmer chisels, one or more framing chisels, pincers, one or more gauge, steel square, large screwdriver, scraper, few hand screws or iron clamps, cutting pliers or nippers, bevel, jointer (plane), or wrench. You might also need an iron miter box but you might want to consider its price before purchased. A grindstone is also important when you want to DIY (Do-It-Yourself) to sharpen your tools. But still, you have the option if you will do it or not.

Furthermore, to give you a better list of the tools mentioned, we provided the following. Although it is not complete, you can add other tools you think are necessary to your woodwork.

-round rasp

1 combined compass and keyhole saw

1 2-foot rule

Sometimes, a few carvers tools are also useful if you can afford them; such as skew-chisel ("), parting-tool ("), and small veining-tool.

Nevertheless, whatever tools you acquire, make sure that you will have the ones with the best quality. You will never be a good workman if your tools cannot meet the requirements of the appropriate tools for your project. You also need to take responsibility of taking care of your tools, because this reflects your attitude as well. Remember, a good craftsman does not only deal with his tools but also his attitude in doing his craft.

Chapter 2 Choosing the Wood to Use

To be able to make your craft possess the standard you wanted, any ordinary wood is not just enough. It should be the appropriate kind of wood that suites your style. The same with meat, when it comes to wood types, there are also choice cuts in lumber. This determines the quality of the work you have done and will do in the future.
