Chapter 1
Introduction
Welcome soldier, i'mPhasma and i'll be your trainer today! With a strong history and experience ofgaming and more importantly, FPS gaming as well as real life combat knowledge,i'll drag you, kicking and screeming if needs be, to victory!
Why is the FPS the mostpopular game genre in the world? Why have certain FPS games eclipsedentertainment forms like music and even movies, selling billions of copiesworldwide? Surely it is our hunter and warrior instincts being stimulated andour competetive nature being pushed to the edge? Wanna feel the rush of adrenalineand hear the bullets whistle overhead, but dont wanna risk your life for therush? FPS provides that! Kids love playing cops and robbers or soldiers, theFPS is just the mature solution! A few weapon choices and tactics however, willjust not do. To fight the good fight, a player must be skilled in all aspectsof modern combat, so who better to train you than a true FPS vet with nearlyten years service! Welcome to the Academy, your last stop before glory!
Throughout your trainingwe will focus on all major skills and disciplines required to turn you into theelite operator feared by all! Starting off with the basic weapon handling andtactical movement that will apply to all modern combat situations, we will thenmove on to more game specific skills and eventually the elite styles of playused by pro gamers! Whatever your skill level, you always have room to improve,so polish your boots, dust off your uniform and get ready to rank up!
What makes a great FPSplayer?
The FPS player must befast, tactical and precise but how? Firstly, good hand-to-eye co-ordination isa must. To be able to efficiently direct your hand and finger actions to carryout multiple tasks simultaneously whilst under pressure. This can come to somenaturally but mostly it is a product of experience that all can gain. I haveplayed computer games since the NES console so I have a great deal ofexperience with relating my hand movements to on-screen actions. Those who haveless experience need not worry because the human being is capable of evolvingand adapting at any stage of our lives.
Previous FPS experienceis priceless. Where some game genres can vary greatly from one game to thenext, games of the FPS genre normally obey the same basic principles and behavein a similar manner. The behaviour and effectiveness of weapons may change butthe basic game mechanics remain the same, therefore experience from any FPSgame is compatible with all other FPS games available.
Another trait of theskilled FPS gamer is an ability to out-think their opponent on the go. Planningis important but being able to modify a plan on the fly, adapt and overcome anew obstacle can be crucial in an FPS. Decision making is by far the decidingfactor in FPS success and it is important to acknowledge how each decisioncontrols the possibilities of the next encounter. In other words, one easilymade split second decision can either place you at an advantageous positionbehind the enemy or can see you run out into open ground being watched by theenemy. An aggressive attitude is also beneficial. This is not a strategy gamewhere calmly planning and executing an action is fine, in an FPS a player mustbecome the hands and weapon on screen and engage the enemy aggressively andwithout mercy!
Finally, anyexperience of real life combat and military tactics can be invaluable. I wentto Army Cadets for two years where my commanding officer was an SAS sergeantand taught us everything the SAS way(apart from marching drills, which he hated) and outside of cadets I have readand watched an untold number of military tactic manuals/guides and combatrelated video/film. On top of that I have done Airsoft (paintballingequivalent) for years. Some may have a lot more real life experience and i'msure many will have less. Although it is not necessary to have this information(i'm sure some of the best FPS gamers in the world haven't even fired a gun),it can be very beneficial to posess. Understanding bullet trajectories andcharacteristics also helps (for example the behaviour of bullets when shootingfrom distance or at moving targets).
These are the main things that will save your skin so makesure they are up to scratch soldier!
Chapter 2
Training
Welcome to the Academy! Here we will focus on what makes you a good player, what makes you a bad player and what will make you a better player.
Single player/campaign modes of FPS games are important. Althoughmultiplayer is more demanding and can be a great deal more stimulating, singleplayer modes are an opportunity to learn the basics of a game before thepressure is on. Once in multiplayer, the objective is staying alive and winningas apposed to learning the finer details of the controls and game. Playing insingle player is a less intense method of learning the game, weapons andmovement/controls. Be sure to play single player modes a lot if your fairly newto the FPS. Remember though, single player modes are only good for learningcontrol of the game, playing against humans is an entirely different issue!Note: Do not use any form of aim assist or auto aim in single player, this willnot allow you to learn the game as effectively.
What is your weapon? Many gamers believe that weapons are the decidingfactors in a combat outcome. This is nonsense. Your mind is your weapon andtactics are the only thing that decide an outcome, the rest is just details.Being tactically aware and making responsible decisions is more effective thanany 'over-powered' weapon. Considering you are facing human opponents with nophysical advantage, it is simply a competition of minds and fingers!
A player should be alert to all possibilities at all times but most of all, must have the capabilities to deal with them.
Movement
Fluid movement is important. A player must practice they're efficieny inall actions. This means being able to go from one action to another, seamlessly. That could mean from running (enemy appears) to strafing, aimingand firing or from laying prone (frag lands on the floor in front of you) tostanding, turning, sprinting and jumping out of a window. Practicing thesethings can be very helpful. Each player has different needs but you must workon whatever you feel you need to improve.
