The Pendant: A Basic Tapestry Adaptation This piece is created by using only what could be called the foundations of macramthe square knot and the half knot.
Although there are only two types of knot, the number of knots and placement of pattern allows for a range of expression, which is the appeal of macram. The pendant uses fine cord and has less repetition of pattern, but otherwise is made in exactly the same way as the tapestry. The instructions are explained in detail with photos, so this piece is recommended for complete beginners. Designed by Narumi Kato Finished size: approx. 7 x 18 (18 x 45 cm) Instructions on page A Native American Tapestry The fringing on both sides of this work is striking. Loosening the twist in the cords brings out more volume and creates a piece that is Native American in flavor. The center and side sections are knotted separately, bringing a sense of depth to the work. The diagonal, dimensional twisted pattern on the sides is formed from diagonal half hitches.
Designed by macco Finished size: approx. 12 x 15 (32 x 38 cm) Instructions on page A Square Tapestry This tapestry is like a sampler of patterns made from double half hitches. Working in diagonal half hitches and changing direction results inan arrowhead pattern, while adding a row of horizontal double half hitches is effective asa break in the pattern. The four horizontal diamond motifs recall a dreamcatcher, so maybe this will be a lucky item that brings happiness. Designed by Aki Hagino Finished size: approx. 9 x 13 (23 x 35 cm) Instructions on page A V-Motif Tapestry The use of a circular piece of wood rather than driftwood or a wooden rod to securethe cord makes for a fresh new approach to display.
As the cord used to create the work is thick, the double half hitches and half knots take on a different vibe from that of finer cord. Loosening the twists in the cord and leaving the ends long easily creates volume, but you are free to cut them to whatever length best suits your interior style.
