Introduction

This book will encourage all beginners who have an interest in learning how to play the guitar to start making their dreams come true. This will serve as a guide to aspiring guitarists and help them explore all the areas of the guitar and understand the instrument deeply. This book will also equip the learner on the various techniques in which you can handle the guitar skillfully and uniquely. The most important thing for the learner is to engage him or herself deeply on the knowledge in order to get the best out of these lessons.

Chapter
How to Practice

I need to remind you that in order to perfect any music instrument, you need to be practicing the skill on a daily basis. The best of the best musicians will always advise you to spare one to two hours a day in order to enhance and advance your musical skill in any instrument. Here are a few techniques on how you can get to practice the guitar;

i) First, you need to understand that the guitar is a mechanical instrument and you should be very careful not to hurt yourself. I need to advise you that many people start while motivated but end up giving up after they have damaged their hands.

ii) When familiarizing with the steel strings, kindly do not overplay but be moderate in playing until your hands develop the muscles.

Note : It is important that you understand that there are two types of guitars. There is the electric guitar and the acoustic guitar. The acoustic guitar requires more strength to play more than the electric guitar. It is vital that you know which guitar you are interacting with.

iii) Find a metronome and a guidebook. A metronome will assist you to play on time and systematically. It will advance your skill in playing uniform notes according to musical bars and patterns. In addition, it makes you grow in terms of speed and smartness in a way that you will not be playing the rambling notes which make unpleasant notes.

iv) Follow the guidebook and as well write your own notes on how you develop each day. It is important to take note of each and every development that you have made in either a diary or a journal. This will help you in the advancement of scales and arpeggios.

v) Develop a positive attitude towards each practice session. This is important for the reason that many people give up or get discouraged when they try to practice a new concept and they continually fail. This journey requires patience and determination. The best way to overcome this is to stay motivated and focus on your own goals and objectives. On the other end, you can google about the experiences of other people and how they overcame the challenge.

vi) Lastly, play in front of other people either friends or close family members. This can be a little challenging for people who have stage fright but it is important for other people to evaluate your progress. Before you perform before anyone, be keen to choose people who will encourage you and motivate your journey towards success playing before people will improve your performance and enable you to get different ideas from other people.

Holding the Guitar

Holding the guitar is a technique that needs to be learned very carefully. The main objective of this technique is to enable you to explore very many chords, styles and arpeggios in a comfortable way. From my experience and those of my mentors, if a person learns to hold the guitar in a wrong way for a long time, the person is most likely to be limited in the way he or she plays the guitar. The following are counsels on how to hold the guitar;

i) Breathe in and out in order to eliminate the buildup tension. It is very common and normal that before you seriously engage yourself in a new instrument there is a pressure and tension that emanates in the learner. It is important that you relax and breathe in before holding the instrument.

ii) Find a suitable environment that you will be comfortable in and can allow you to move your guitar around. On the first time, playing the guitar will seem to be very uncomfortable but should not be painful. I would freely advise you that if you feel any pain please stop immediately because it may make you hold the guitar in the wrong way.

iii) Select a seat that has an appropriate height. An appropriate height is that which your thighs are at an angle slightly pointed upward. You have to make sure that the chair you have selected allows you to access the fret of the guitar. This is important for the reason that you might get very tired and exhausted if you pick a seat that makes you tiptoe while paying the guitar.

iv) Are you right-handed or left-handed? For a right-handed person, the guitar should rest on the right knee. It is important to keep the guitar straight and flexible. The guitar should extend in a direction away from your body and its neck placed in an angle facing upwards.

v) The fretting hand should make a clawing cycle while holding and playing the guitar. This is the left hand. In a simple explanation, the thumb of the left hand should be placed at a distance half away from the middle of the top and bottom of the neck of the guitar. Unlike most of the unprofessional learners do not hold the guitar like a hammer for the reason that it will limit you against striking all the notes correctly.
