Anopha is a small town with a big quarry near Ffarquhar. Thomas is working at the quarry with his friend Mavis the Diesel Engine. During the day, there is a lot going on. People are coming and going, and Thomas and Mavis are kept busy pushing freight cars full of supplies and pulling loads of dirt and stone.
Its a lot of hard work, but Thomas likes working with Mavis. But at night, the quarry is a scary place. The workers have all gone home, and it is very quiet and dark. The wind makes funny noises, and the moon makes funny shadows. Each day seems shorter and colder. Mavis and Thomas are both excited about Halloween. Mavis and Thomas are both excited about Halloween.
They like to try to scare each other with stories of ghosts and graveyards. One night, Thomas was telling Mavis about the Ghost of the Black Loch. Suddenly there was a loud crash. Both engines were very startled and quite scared. They were looking all around when a raccoon walked out of the trash shed. Thomas peeped loudly.
Then it was the raccoons turn to be startled. Thomas and Mavis laughed. One morning, the quarry was especially busy. Everyone was working even harder than usual. Ropes were being hung from the trees around the quarry, and tables were being set up everywhere. Just then, Thomas Driver hurried up. Just then, Thomas Driver hurried up.
Off we go, Thomas! We are going into Anopha to pick up an important Special. What are we picking up? asked Thomas. We have to get the children for the big Halloween party and we dont want to be late. Thomas was very excited. He couldnt wait to see all of the children in their costumes. Thomas, did you know it is bad luck if a black cat crosses your tracks? said his Driver. Thomas, did you know it is bad luck if a black cat crosses your tracks? said his Driver.
Its not my fault, peeped Thomas. The cat didnt stop at the crossing signal. But suddenly Thomas seemed to be having bad luck. As soon as they pulled into Anopha, Thomas had to stop at a crossing so that Gordon could pass with the Express. The train was long, and Gordon was going slower than usual. Then Thomas had to stop again because someone had left some bags of leaves on the tracks.
As his Driver cleared them away, he grumbled, Some older children think that Halloween is an excuse to do naughty, dangerous things. And when they finally reached the station, Thomas had to stop behind a big pile of hay and he couldnt see any of the children who were in costume. To make matters worse, Thomas saw the black cat again. Dont cross my path, Thomas peeped loudly. I dont need any more bad luck. But his luck did not improve.
Although Thomas could hear lots of laughter and voices, he couldnt see anything going on around him. This is terrible, he complained. I cannot see a thing. No time to chat, Thomas, answered his Driver. We have to get back to the quarryand fast. On the way back to the quarry, Thomas had to stop at another signal.
